I went to take out my battery because it was shot and saw this. The bolt from the end of the drive shaft has punched or worn through the crank case cover.

I changed my track this fall. I thought I put everything back properly and torqued it properly. Any ideas on what could have caused this? I'm going to take it apart on Monday when it warms up to access the extent of the damage.

I'm thinking for sure new chain case cover, bolt and clip to hold it in.

Oooo Thats nasty. Did you torque it to spec and use loctite on the bolt ?? Reason I ask I just took mine apart to make it a 144 and I want to be sure there isnt another issue that may have caused that.

There is a snap ring that goes into the hub after the bolt is installed to prevent the bolt from backing out too far. I'd guess the snap ring let go.

I had that happen a couple years ago. I think my failure was caused by not thoroughly cleaning the bolt and the threads in the shaft. Used solvent the next time and the Loctite worked.

What parts did you end up having to replace?

I know I installed the snap ring. I can see it partially hanging out.

Hopefully the parts will be available.

Spoke to a service guy at the dealer today. He said he can have it welded for me. Drop it off one day, pick it up the next.

I ordered a new bolt, circlip and bearing (in case the existing one is damaged). I should be back up and running by the weekend.

Thank you Winnipeg Sport and Leisure!

Yes I had that happen also...... Twice. First was under warranty and dealer fixed it. Second time I did it and is still holding. I also thought that the bolt threads were not cleaned properly before lock tite was applied.

Did you have any other damage than the chain case?

Thinking back I think I torqued the bolt prior to putting the skid back in. If I remember right I had trouble preventing the drive shaft from turning when I tried to tighten the bolt.

I will chase the thread with a tap and then use some solvent to clean and blast with air.

I know you have to be careful with temperature when using Loctite. It doesn't cure if the temperature is too low.

It's a common problem. Those bolts are also prone to breaking. When I bought my Nytro I did a track swap and found the bolt was broken but hadn't wrecked anything yet. I think the fix was a shorter bolt. Had the same thing happen on a Doo 670. I know you shouldn't but when I tighten it I use an impact driver. I works good for the application.

No just the chain case. The second time the bolt had broke I pulled bolt out and put some tape over cover filled the oil and drive a few miles back home. I put new bearings in both times just because but they seemed fine both times. Only other time I had trouble was when ajusted backed off on me and the chain piled up and cracked the case.
