mnmsnowbeast said:We broke in 3 apex/attak sleds last year, all under load in 3-4 inches of snow, and all three of them wfo for short bursts of say 1014 seconds, just like you were drag racing 1/4 mile, hold it to the pin like that under load for the first 25 miles that all the time you will have to seat the rings, you need pressure to do this the right way. Now we all have sleds that ran 115-120 gps last year and not one used a drop of oil,do what you want but we had much better luck this way than i did in 03 with my rx1 that i broke in on a jack stand with a hose running water to cool it down,i used to back a trailer into a lake to load the motor and always had good luck with that, but in 03 i did not do this, and i also ran it for ixtended periods of time at one speed 30-40 mph never again,i like motos thinking it works if done right!Nattydread said:Purchased my first four stroke, and I am looking at how to break it in.. how did you break in your sled? and how has that worked for you thus far?
makes more sense now that i've thought about it for awhile. i work at a john deere dealer and whenever we rebuild a tractor motor or get a new one in, we put them on the dyno and work the &*#@ out of them. i realize a little 4 stroke gas is different than a big 6 cylinder diesel but its still the same idea when it comes to break in.

Doug said:Maybe the more powerful 4-strokes are different, but I ran my SX 700 for 13,000 miles with a track WAY looser than the manual says with ZERO problems. In my opinion, they spec the track so tight to cover their butt against ratcheting and maybe derailures, and allow for longer intervals between setting the tightness.
As far as the engine, I'm with all these guys in the "full blast in short intervals" to seat the rings.
Doug, I thought the tight track specs were to increase Yamaha's Hyfax Sales. LOL

I broke mine in by letting it run, till it would reach 195° when the fan would turn on the Attak, and then let it cool down. Then after 12 miles of on/off the throttle, it was bottle time!
All of the 4 strokes I have owned, have been treated the same way, and never had a bit of problems.

I took my sled around the yard one time after I picked it up. I think I might have to actually tighten the track, cuz it will ratchet at 1/4 throttle.
I plan on driving it just like its already been broken in, but I will limit WFO to 3-8 sec. bursts, for the first 100 miles anyway.

Just give'er !!!!!!! but don't hold the throttle WFO for more then a few seconds, after a 100 miles or so miles, you should be good to go, I never remember to break in my sleds, because once you get on those trails, and your with your buddies, I just lose all thoughts and it's go time, Brapppppp, Brapppppppp

If you are talking woodys than yes keith broke his in on asphalt last year in oxford plains and his runs great,we broke our in on that little 3-4 " of snow last nov. in my boys driveway 1/2 mile long, but all i could hold it to the bars for was 1/4 mile bursts, and in no time mine was up to mas rpms,i never got the motor hot either,it was perfect timing that little snow storm, than we went up to the demo yard in jackman thanksgiven sat. last year and put 200 miles up there on the log roads, and it would pull 110 gps right out of the gate,no oil issues all year, now 2000 miles runs strong..Nattydread said:Local dealer here in Maine who does a lot of racing concurs, run it hard, vary the speeds, no lake runs, it will be broken in just right...
