Broken Relay Rod.. Again!

Anyone broke relay rods? The are the two rods that are on each side of the rear shock. 2 weeks ago I broke one, dont know how it broke but I had just done a bushing kit and replaced all the bushings except the ones on these bars and the transfer rods because they werent included in the kit. They were worn some but not like the bushings on the ends of all the pivot points of the cross shafts. Anyway... somehow one broke and of couse got twisted up like a pretzel. I broke the rest of it off and she was fine for 50 miles home with only one. I found a piece of scrap strap steel and had a friend weld the ends back on to it. I painted it and put it back on. I could feel just a bit of tap.. tap... on my feet on small stutter bumps as transfer took place and I know that was because of the play in the bushings. So this Sat. I hit a good hard bump and my suspension colapsed and never came up. ( we rode 160 hard miles the day before and were on about mile 80 that day) We stole a bar off of my buddies Viper and we got back ok .

My guess is he play in the bushing allowing the movement was sort of "hammering" on the bars and cracked the welds? Thats where they both broke.

In looking at the Viper bars I see that the bushings are rubber not plastic? Im not sure why they are different? But I like the looks of these better>..?? Im going to mod extra support on these babys before I fix it again.

Anyone ever have this happen?

Thoughs? Idea?

Sounds like your shock might be sticking.... ie, its not rebounding correctly. If its not extending correctly and you hit a bump with the front of the rails, the rails may try to PULL the shock out, which will cause the relay rods to be compressed -- they should only pull, not push.
 
Another thing... the shock can have this problem without being defective if its set with too much rebound damping. If thats the case and you LIKE the amount of rebound, then your best bet would be to reinforce the rods in order to take the push. This would be a very simple modification, just run another strap along the relay rods perpendicular to the existing one -- all you need to do is keep it from bending.
