I just broke BOTH relay rods in the skidframe of my '03 RX-1 tonight. I can't believe how thin and flimsy those things are!!! Is there any source for aftermarket relay rods? Thanks!

Relay rods? If you mean TRANSFER rods, you can get them from mountainperformance.com, maxxperf.com, or just about anywhere else you look.

Nope, not the TRANSER rods...although I will be buying an aftermarket kit for those, since I have read they are known for being weak during hard riding. The RELAY rods are the thin, gold colored pieces (2 of them) running parallel to the rear shock, right next to it. They have a round bushing on each end, and very thin (less than 1/16") straps of steel running in between. I did a bunch of research last night and couldn't find any info on them at all. Apparently I'm not the only one breaking them though, since the Pittsburg dealer usually keeps them in stock (clue #1) but they had been sold over the weekend (clue #2).

I wouldn't go aftermarket on those. They are NOT a high-stress component, and they do NOT commonly break.

The relay rod should be strengthen by welding on more steel to the side of it if you are using a rear shock without rebound damping with high spring preload and FRA set to hard. The rods do fine on compression stroke cause they are seeing only pulling force applied to them. On the rebound stroke they will take on some serious push from the shock spring and may bend/break. It happened on my '01 SX700R equipped with race ohlins all around. I failed to strengthen the rods resulting in a damaged rear ohlin shock $$$$$ and broken relay rods. This happend after 20 miles riding through 2-3 ft moguls though.

I fixed the issue tonight. I was going to use rod, like Cats use, maybe 1/2" hollow or 3/8" solid, but I checked the clearance to the spring and I just couldn't fit it in there. I measured the original rods at 1" x .100" (less than 1/8" thick), so I made new ones using the original end links and 1" x 3/16" steel, almost twice as thick as stock. That should eliminate any problems. I'll post a pic when the paint is dry.
