What should I look for? What should I look out for? Wasn't there something about a front end update?

-Thanks,

my advice not too. I almost bought a new 08 from the dealer, and after reading these forums I got a 2011 XTX, adfter 2 rides I am in love. Do your research on the forums. Lots of handling issues with the 08's.

I disagree! If the price is right, buy the 08.
I have an 08 and have done some mods to it. I think it handles awesome. All you need to do is spend a little $ and it will be a solid sled. You would probably spend the $ on the newer sled anyway.

Upgraded ski's, ball joint mod, ski shim, carbides and you will have a rock solid sled.
Its all about the $ and your time. 08's can be bought cheap. Best bang for the buck i alot of cases.

agreed...most of the handling issues that you read about are original posts from 08...before people played with them and figured the sled out...check the FAQ section and there is a ton of good info to get the 08's to handle great...I have an 08 and love it...put C&As on and dropped the floats to 50psi last season and it was fine...did the ball joint mod this season and may pull the limiter one hole after the first ride if I think it needs more bite.

I could have got the 08 for 6500 OTD brand new. I bought the 2011(XTX) for 9200 OTD. If you know how to work on the sled, are willing to spend 1k or so on it right out of the box and wait on parts, etc, then yeah I guess that would be a good option. Just my 2 cents. Dont forget the other irratating issues on the 08 as well.....

A thousand dollars???
I think not!!

Here is a list:
ball joint mod =$30.00 or less at the local machine shop
Ski Doo pilot skis = $150 for used or 250 on flee-bay
Set toe in $ free, takes 5 minutes

How does that add up to $1000.00?

Heck, add a Ulmer clutch kit and you still have cash left for storage bags etc...

Went from the worst to the best sled i;ve ridden, by the mods said.
x2!!!Could not agree more! I'd buy another 08 in a heartbeat now that the "bugs " are worked out.Just don't expect it to be the perfect setup out of the box. Its just too bad the08's we're running now isn't what Yamaha sold in the first place. :o|

I agree paid 6800 new for mine and love the thing!!!! paid 250 ebay for the skis and am gonna get the ball joint mod done soon. I dont even complain about the handling at all either. i love tinkering so the setup changes evry time im riding but 55-60 in the floats and the clickers are always moving but its been a great sled for me. Ask everyone behind me how it handles the twisties...lol better than my rage thats for sure. almost as good as my viper but i dont think ill get it to turn like that sled.

You only mention 3 things to fix, but reading this thread alone is enough to THINK it would be more than that....

http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=56865

I am pretty sure there were like 11or was it 13 changes to the front end alone from 2008 to 2009. Heck the entire ski frame appears to have changed based on the specs (height, length etc) I was also referring to the bad subframe which I read about on this site I believe, having the front end done by a reputable place, for (I think it was a couple hundred bucks or so) then having to wait on the parts to be sent back, plus the 200 for the skis, and whatever else the problems were.

Look I am not trying to start a pissing match with anyone, I am simply stating my opinion. Which is I would not want to buy a product that out of the box I would have to fix basically before it was ridable (according to many on this site) if I had the choice, which I obviously did, I went with the 2011 vs the 2008. If you have a 2008 and are happy with it thats great! But if the option was there and the price was not too much different then I would opt for another model year.

It also just seemed strange TO ME.... again MY OPINION only why there was a 2008 left on the showroom floor and no 2009 or 2010's!

all we are saying with our 08s is with a little know how and yes a little bit of cash you an make them just as good as a 09 and above. Yes there are issues but what sled doesnt have issues???? They are all money pits and time users (not wasters like the wife says, cuz its so darn fun). Not saying dont buy a newer one if you have the money just letting this guy know you can solve the issues of the 08 front end, and maybee save a little money, which is what he was asking in the first place.

I just bought a 08 rtx and haven't put any money into it (yet) but i did tinkering with before i rode it. Read as much you can on here and learn about them. So much information on how to set them up and what to look for. From my first ride on it to were i have it now is a complete night and day different sled lol!!! Sooooooo much fun, just have to pound on it to appreciate it and to make it work like it was designed too. Hammer the rough stuff :die
