Steve Taylor came into the Cadillac, Mich. round of the WPSA Regional
Snocross series with plenty of business to do - such as winning the
postponed final round of last January's Gaylord, Mich. race, and then
winning the Cadillac round itself. He did both with style, using the
four-stroke power of his factory-modified 2008 Yamaha FX Nytro (and his
considerable jumping skills) to win three out of four qualifying races
and both final events over the weekend. The performance was yet another
graphic display of Yamaha four-stroke power in the world of
high-performance snowmobiles.
To fit in both qualifying and final races leftover from the Jan. 12-13
Gaylord weekend, together with the required qualifying for the Cadillac
weekend, event organizers squeezed an unbelievable 121 races into
Saturday's program. Taylor won both his qualifying race and the 12-lap
Gaylord final in downright balmy Michigan winter conditions - sunny
skies and 40 degrees. Despite being moved to the back of the grid for a
minor practice rule infraction, he sliced his FX Nytro quickly up-field
to win the qualifier, then followed up with a decisive win in the final.
Moreover, Taylor's flying skills had the fairgrounds stadium crowd in
awe as he quad jumped his Yamaha over two complete sets of doubles.
The Cadillac round started just as well for Taylor with a win in the
first of three qualifying races on Saturday. But in the second
qualifier, a chance collision with friend and rival Wes Selby broke one
of Taylor's skis, resulting in his only DNF of the weekend. Undeterred,
he returned for victory in Sunday morning's final qualifier, and then
lined up for the 12-lap afternoon final. With lower temperatures
creating ideal snow conditions, Taylor rocketed immediately into the
lead and put his FX Nytro into cruise mode around the big-air oval. That
is, until a charging Selby once again made a move to get by. This time
Taylor wisely avoided trouble and held back to watch his rival for
several laps, noticing a growing raggedness as the laps wore on. With a
few laps remaining Taylor swept decisively back into the lead and onto
victory. The FX Nytro's winning weekend was complete.
