Hey guys, hoping you can help me out with a buddy’s winder.
When whacking then throttle it makes a loud ratcheting sound. Almost grinding like. Would only make this sound when he would give the throttle a good whack. The track was looser than to my liking, so we tightened it up and now it’s worse. Makes the sound almost every time he hits the throttle. It sounds like it’s coming from the clutch side.
Looked it over and nothing is jumping out at me. I was thinking maybe the driveshaft bearing spun, but not sure what the symptoms of that would be.
We are 200 miles from the truck so wondering if it’s safe to ride or if he should he calling a cab to get the truck and trailer .
Any help would be much appreciated !

A couple thoughts come to mind:
-try a new belt first...they can fool you some time
-it could be a loose chain or chain tensioner issue
If it only makes the noise at high throttle applications...baby it until you get home and stay out out of situations that cause the noise.

Thanks Bob.
I agree and think it’s the chain case tensioner that let go on it. Assuming we’ll see the roller and screws loose when we get it apart. Makes sense

I was thinking the belt too...like you said they can be ready to go/blow and have chunks missing causing the grinding noise feel. Or chain to loose maybe too as you said. Jack shaft bearing maybe going??
I’d ride it nice and easy and get it back to the truck. If it runs fine when you don’t pin it..just don’t pin it lol, and ride it Easily/steady.

Belt or chain would be my guess.... Look to see if the tensioner backed out

Grab the secondary and rock it forward and backwards see how much slack you have in chain , only way to check short of pulling muffler.

Hand tighten tensioner bolt all the way in and back out 1-1/2 turns.

Messed bearings somewhere in chaincase or on driveshaft is my guess.
