Need some help with this one. I have a 2008 Nytro RTX that I am slowly building/changing. As of now I have done the following to it:
Header pipes
K&N intake filters
Silencer
Programmer
New clutch
Gearing
picked to 96 (changing to 144)
and a few minor front and rear suspension changes.
Along with quite a few exterior changes for it's own look.
My next step was to turn the engine into a stroker. Which I was hoping would put the engine in the 180+ range. We will see after the dyno.
The decision I have is this. A dealer by me called and said they just got in an 07 Apex RTX with only 81 miles on it. Mine only has about 900. This sled allready has the same stuff as mine plus the following items:
rod and piston work
supercharger
heat exchanger
Picked to 192
They said it should be pushing 260-270HP.
This sled costs the same amount as mine once I add the stroker kit. The dealer is saying Why add the stroker when you could have the lower milege sled with all of the goodies for about the same price?? The reason I hesitate is that 270+ HP with that many pics sound like a lot of work on the trails. When you come around the turns, wouldn't the sled want to lift the ski's, and make it hard to control? The other problem I see is I like the rider forward style. How comfortable is the Apex if add a 2" extension, and ride it like that? The nice thing is that the apex has had most of the bugs worked out of it, and doesn't have the front end problems like the Nytro. Everyone keeps telling me that there is no such thing as to much horse power, but I don't know if that is boondockers talking or trail riders talking? We do around 100-170 miles a day. What do you think? Thought I would put this on the Apex forum, since I don't know as much about their riding style and issues. Thanks for the help again

I have/had an Apex RTX 06' with shock work and risers and all the non-power goodies. I will say this after a 150-200 mile aggressive day I was wipped. I'm looking forward to the Nytro, I couldn't imagine trying to manage 200+ horses in an Apex on a trail. To each his/her own.

Riding style
What do you think about the riding style/differences between the two sled styles? Especially with the power of each of these. Right now I putting out about 150 with out the stroker, and hoping for around 180ish with it. Which one would be the least workout for trails? I am in my early 30's. So I should be able to handle a little abuse on the trails I hope

If you are more of a cruiser, not slow but more just miles miles miles the Apex may suite better as the larger fuel tank and more relacked position. If you want to hit the trails hard and enjoy the rough sections I would opt for the Nytro. The Apex after all the work and $$$ was great but I don't think it will compare to the Nyto or what the Nytro does. I personally prefer the ergos of the Nytro over the Apex. My Apex felt like a old Indy compared to the Nytro, but that's how I like to sit. I was alway on top of the fuel tank of my Apex. Plus the Apex has some issues of its own, (you mentioned the Nytro front end) not that there is anything major, but the design doesn't fair well to a lot of wear and tear with out frequent inspection. The exhaust is the first thing that comes to mind. Serch donuts and you'll see what I'm talking about. I would look at how you intend to ride and base your desision of off of that.

Made a decision
After thinking about it, I am sticking with the nytro. I stood on the Apex, and didn't care for the width of the tank, and feel while standing. Also the dealer swayed me with his new offer. The price of the Apex is very good, but what he wanted to give for my Nytro wasn't. Hey they have to make money. SO I will start converting the Nytro to a stroker first this year, and be happy with that for now. Possibly work my way up to a turbo or charger next year. Thank you for the input, and help as usual

Remember one thing on the donuts.... there are a lot of RX-1s, RS class sleds and Apex, Attacks and the likes out there. The Nytro has only been out for one season. The donuts don't fail on all sleds at low mileage.
On the HP question, no there cannot be too much power in a sled, only problem would be the driver. I have been at 280+ HP for the last seasons, stepping it up even more for next season, looking at pushing past 300+ HP on low boost LOL. It's no problem riding it with all that power, you have to get used to it tho, and you have to respect the sled a lot more than you used to. When you get the feel for it and you learn how to work the throttle to have it do what you want it to, the feeling is hard to describe, one word ADRENALINE (and I'm not talking the Ski-Doo type of adrenaline), and be careful it's highly addictive. LOL.

Dont stroke it!!
Thats a bad idea, and I have seen many sleds with fundy motors make less power then stock, then blow up. The key is not to touch the motor.
I personally like the apex better than the nytro and it doesnt tire me out at all. If I had found a sled like that boosted apex when I bought mine, I would have went with the boosted apex instead.

Is that because it stresses out the engine to much? The Apex price itself is a great deal, but the beating I would take on the Nytro OUCH! I have been tossing around putting the boost on the NYtro also. Wanted to see what the stroker got on the dyno first. See if it is worth the dough or not. Thanks for the input and help

Don't know much about engines, or how much a kit of what you want to do cost. But why not just get super or turbocharger and run lower boost numbers so that you can still run on pump gas, this way you will hit the 200 hp mark pretty easy.

$3500-$3,8000.00 for a stroker installed, and $5,500-6,500 for a boost of some sort installed. Unless I can find a used boost. The apex I was looking at had both, and 192 picks, Plus a lot of other goodies. The sled is at Hauk right now, if some one else is interested. It is the one that was in the Snowmobile calendar. It is the 07 limited edition black and yellow with lots of work done to it, and only 81 miles on it. I will let Pat discuss pricing with you,(don't want to medal in his business) but it seems like a good deal to me. I would love to add a supercharger. Agree 100%, I didn't mean to sound like the Nytro may not have donut issues, as if you look they are of the same design. However, I do feel that with the stiffer chassis and shorter pipe, tunnel/muffler support I think this issue may not be as prevalent as on the Apex's. Just my thoughts on it but time will tell. I will tell you this I will be inspecting the donuts on my Nytro after the first season just to confirm.

Got Apex RTX?
Good advice for all Yamaha 4strokes.
I changed the donuts at 6800 kms or 4200 miles when going turbo, those donuts were shot except for one of them. This summer I removed my turbo kit at 13700 kms or 8500 miles, all donuts were in good condition and will not need replacement at this time.

Waiting to hear from the dealer. Trying to get them to sweeten up the deal. We shall see. It makes since for $-HP. I originally thought I would go Stroker, get used to that, and pay that off, then go to boost next year. Then this opportunity happened. Don't know everything depends on $. My buddy asked me if I was going to get a plow for the front end, to help keep it down
DAMN Ski-doo guys. He thinks it will be to hard to handle on those Wisconsin and Michigan tight trails.tkuss

Don't want to hyjack this thread, but what is a stroker kit. Is it just more displacement? or a longer piston stroke?
