Went out for final 300km rip today. Cruising through the twistiies doing maybe 40mph and all of a sudden - nothing! Thought it was a belt at first. Shut it down quick. Nope. Took panel off and oil all over the belly pan with large chunks of metal.

My guess is it blew a rod right through the block! @$*%! I'll have to take it to the dealer and see what's covered.

Hopefully warranted with YES and you should be as good or better than new, still major bummer

Did you change the rods when you boosted it? Stock rods from 2016 and up in the vipers will not take being boosted. 2014 and 2015 could be turbocharged with stock rods.

Warranty will not cover aftermarket turbocharged engine

.

I didn't enter into this turbo add on lightly. I did my homework. I knew there was a rod issue with 2016's but I also knew there were conflicting reports on whether it was resolved in later years. which is why I corresponded directly with Dave from Hurricane by email to make sure my 18 was okay. He confirmed back to me that it would be fine which is the ONLY reason why I proceeded with an affordable used kit. I will leave my review of my experience with hurricane for another day pending the confirmation that this was actually a rod failure.

FYI, in MPI’s turbo instructions it says 2016 and newer are not to be turboed. Yamaha also states no turbo for 2016 and newer. only 2014&2015’s should be turboed.

Well looks like I trusted the wrong company to know their product and to which it applications they fit safely Likely be my very expensive mistake unless dealer comes through.

should of asked on here, and not the guy trying to sell you a turbo kit. sucks

I did scour this site for info and found two answers. Ulmer no. Hurricane yes.

I saw Hurricane appeared to be a trusted, experienced vendor so I posed the question to him directly before purchasing. I expected that based on his experience as a builder and his ability to see engine internals, that I don't have access to, he would supply me with an answer that would be correct and err on the conservative side if there was any question at all.

Also he didn't sellme the kit. I bought it used from a very good member here after I received confirmation I was good.

Yamaha will want pictures of the engine failure by your dealers mech before they warranty anything, I would say they will frown on a aftermarket turbo bolted to one of their engines where they already warned about no add on turbo's for 16's and up, guy at Hurricane should have known better than to reassure you would be safe adding the 190 kit, do you think hurricane will go good for it, not a chance, and I suspect neither will Yamaha.

I hear alot of good about Hurricane. Yeah, I caught that you didn't buy it from him. I'm sure he gave you what he thinks is an honest answer. Can't really blame Hurricane. Good luck with the warranty. A buddy of mine had a 16 viper with dealer installed turbo. Yamaha had him bring it in over the summer and put different rods in it to be warranty compliant

Hurricane turbo is an easy install, take it off and then go to the dealer, 2017 and up rods are a little better than the 16's that were not heat treated correctly but totally different than the 14/15, that's why they last little while and then eventually go boom.
