I just drained my chain case. When I fill it back up do I measure the level on the stick by pushing the stick all the way in so it's sealed or just by lowering it until the rubber gasket sits on top of the fill hole? It would be a 1.5 inch difference between the two which is significant.

Just let it rest on top for measuring the oil level, you dont push it down.
I'm gong to disagree...Push it in all the way to check it...I think that is what the manual says. Manual is out in the garage I will check it later.
There is a sticker on the machine I think it is on the belt cover that tells you how much to put back in. When you buy it from Yamaha it is the correct amount to refill it in the container they sell.

On my Honda Rancher, you have the dip stick not pushed in, or threaded in when you take the oil level.
I know it may not be the same, as its entirely different brand and vehicle, but just thought id throw that out there.

Does anyone know for sure? It would make a big difference.

You must push the dipstick all the way in to where it stops.

Whenever checking any fluid level you must have the dip stick pushed in or screwed in all the way.

I believe the the oil dipstick on the Apex is checked without being screwed in. Thats why I asked in case the chain case was also done this way.

You are correct about checking the Apex oil level, I just looked it up. I had been checking mine with the dipstick screwed in all the way. But I always fill it up to the full level so with the dipstick not screw in it reads half way between F and E. That procedure goes against the grain. I have been working on 4 stroke engines for over 30 year and the Apex is first engine I have seen where you check the oil level without the dipstick not seated all the way to the bottom. The chain case level is checked with the dipstick in all the way. I dissembled my chain case to inspect it for wear. The spec on the amount of chain case oil is 8.5oz. (8oz.comes in the container of Yamaha's chain case oil). When I refilled the chain case with the 8 oz container and checked the level with the dipstick pushed in all the way, it was half way between min and max.

Did 8 oz put you between min and max on the "standard" side of the dipstick or the "reverse" side?

It's probably only about 3-4 OZ. Add a little and monitor the dip stick.vice108 said:mrance111 said:When I refilled the chain case with the 8 oz container and checked the level with the dipstick pushed in all the way, it was half way between min and max.
