Chain case fluid type and quantity

yamaha reccomends 70w or 80w gear oil. i am using 75w140 royal purple in mine. as to the oz/ml it takes, not shure as i usually add to the full mark on the chaincase dipstick.

I have always wondered why on the dipstick it has 2 different marks, one for reverse models and one for standard models and why the levels would be different. just doesn't make sence to me.

i believe the reverse case takes more because it has an idler gear in the center that also needs to be oiled properly.

You can also use a synthetic base ATF fluid if you like. ATF is a high quaility lubricant and works great in simple gear cases like this one.

The dip stick issue is confusing. One side shows marks for reverse, and the other for standard. The side for reverse has the full mark below the minimum mark on the standard side. The manual even shows this. Just doesn't make sense to me unless the chaincase is larger for the sleds with reverse.

Mine has reverse, however the shop used the standard markings to fill it, so it would be overfull actually, can there be any harm in this?

ATF is hydraulic fluid first and foremost. Any lubrication is a secondary concern. The heats and pressures in an ATF are vastly different than a chain drive. My guess is the only reason people ever started putting it in is because lots of chain oil is also red in color... ATF can also attack certain metals and some rubber seals.

full synth 75w-90 is an infinitely better choice!

have not personally had any issues. i usually fill to the full mark on the standard side. never puked any out at all even after doing a oood 5-6 km of wot. mostly causes some drag so a small top end loss is the theory on the overfilling that i have heard.
