The drain plug is on the backside (inside the tunnel). Then pull the dipstick to finish draining. Might as well pull the cover off and adjust the chain tension.
Oil type: Gear Oil API "Gl-3" SAE #75 or #80
0.25 Litres (8.8 Imp. oz / 8.5 US oz)
As for synthetic...a friend of mine says he tried it and notice an increase in wear (ie: filings in the oil) and hasn't used it since. He did say though that the gear and chain were cheap aftermarket jobbers. Hard to say.

Before you take off the cover…I always place a piece of poly and some papertowl to catch that bit of oil that will dribble out into the belly…..As the previous post…that’s good advice to check out your chain and adjust it to spec….JD

Chaincase Oil
I have been using synthetic oil for years with no problems, it seems to be cleaner to me and I do alot of high speed running.

Why are we taking the cover off to adjust the chain? Don't you have to take the side panel off to do that. That sounds like a lot of work for nothing.

Actually it isn't that bad. Had to take it off for the drive shaft. Took about an hour. Now I've got to put the oil back in.....looked through the manual and didn't see it. Anyone know how many oz. go in there? My dealer didn't even offer to much help, they didn't know for sure.

Guys, its really easy,do yourself a favor,if you are taking cover off, than leave the pos drain plug in place as you will loose more oil from the angle of the drain hole onto your track. Just take off rotor and cover, its straight foward, heck the side panels screws will give you more of a problem if they have never been off more than the chaincase. Just use automotive gear 80# weight is fine, dont over tighten your chain, and just fill up to the fill line on the dip stick, good luck pete

OH la la, those trans with reverse d'ont take a lot of oil.
I already fill it up as normal and the oil was pasing true seal important that the level is straight on reverse mark. change my oil, close the trans and, few time i have put to much oil, take it out now. no problem i by miself a nice siphon (20 buck a nice one) fit a small straight hose and now i can change oil without taking that cap off. two hours save...

8.5 US oz (no reverse). This is according to the service manual. Also, I didn't find that the oil drained onto the track at all.

note that mine is black moutain ed and we had to install the reverse kit
just changed my gearing to 20 41 to reduce top speed
yeah i agree that the sidepanel fasteners are the tough ones! one thing the small gears have tiny spring betwen them you will notice it when taking them apart all the stuff other is straight forward
oh yeah refill your chaincase before mounting disk and calippers much better space that way
good luck
