I'm getting a new 07 apex RTX and i was just wondering about the chaincase. I hear some stories about grinding problems or something to do with reverse. Is this problem fixed with the 2007 model?

Unfortunately it's more than that. The 06 Apex uses a Magnesium chaincase and it runs much hotter than the previous Aluminum chaincase.

The extra heat shortens the life of the oil, chain and seals. Some have failed catastrophically (after the oil has leaked out), others haven't.

With any luck, Yamaha will install Aluminum chaincases in the 2007's and figure out a fix (high temperature seals and higher quality lubricant) for the 06's.

As far as reverse, yes it seems that many may have come from the factory with the reverse linkage out of adjustment.

The magnesium chaincase was first used in 05. I don't remember of any failures in them, so either some part got messed up (vent plug?), or something got installed wrong (case seal?). In any case, its not an engineering problem, its a manufacturing defect. There is NO REASON to assume that the problem will resurface next year.

05 used a magnesium chaincase cover only. 06 it's all magnesium.

I've heard a rumor that Yamaha might have improved the durability of the chaincase for 07.
