I just re-geared my GT and all went smooth and easy. Until I put the chaincase cover back on. I cannot get the shift forks on the cover to engage with the gear. Is there a trick to it?

You have to position the the shift fork out about 1-2 inches as you bring the cover in place. You can do this by using the shift lever.

yeah, I just did mine...kinda point the fork towards the gear and hold the cover just a little higher than the case and slowly move it over to the case and lower it slightly too!!!!

Thanks, How are you holding the cover higher than the case? The top shaft has to slide in first which makes it stationary. It sounds like its just a matter of massaging it on. I dicked with it for 15 minutes and assumed there was something I was missing.
So are you saying put the shift fork out around half way?

kinda tilt it, I believe.....as long as the fork is above the lower gear at an angle, it'll slip on the ring.
be careful not to loose or drop the small washer that goes against the small gears. It is easy not to have it in place when you are done. (been there, done that) The rest is just a matter of practice. The hose makes it a pain, but doable.

Ya, you can't really raise the cover up a bit like you can on the "other sleds" that do not have the shaft protruding through them. But you are right, you have to get that fork out far enough to engage the gap and then as you move the cover into place you need to work the shift lever a bit to get the fork to drop further into the gap. Once you do it a couple times, it is a cakewalk. Well, maybe not that easy. But it should not difficult. If there is difficulty, then maybe it is time to remove the cover and take another look at your gear stack. And, ... the washer #68 is tricky. So is the little spring #65 between the counter gear #66 and the reverse drive gear #63.

I put a 23 tooth top gear. I have always had good luck with SRX and Vipers with gearing down and clutch around the gearing. I want 0-100 and not as concerned with breaking the speed of sound. But in the past I have never lost and usually gained top speed when gearing down. I think if the clutches are working properly that going down one only helps. Not to mention that I am about 240 and the lower gear seems to carry me better. Not sure on the Apex as its my first 4 stroke but time will tell. Several others in out group with "clutch kits' to compare with.

What is the differnece in bottom gears between reverse and non-reverse?
I picked up an 05 that the owner had reverse put in and geared down, but he gave me two 40 tooth bottom gears. He said he went to 42.
One is a solid gear the other has 1" holes around it? Just wondering if I have a stock 40 and a reverse 40?
I can post picks if someone can help me out with this? + both would be for sale once I know what they are.
