Chaincase - Jackshaft Bearing Installation direction

I just re-assembled mine Sunday and came across the same darn question. Looked it up in the service manual and nope, the rubber seal side goes towards the chain. The open side is towards the main shaft seal (towards the track) and the manual calls for you to add grease between the outer seal and the bearing for lube. Apparently that bottom chaincase bearing doesn't get lubed from the chaincase oil by design... probably why guys burn them up. I didn't know this...

How do you grease the bearing when all the drivetrain is together as regular maintainance?? I'am missing something here.
 
I've heard of guys making 2 or 3 small pin holes in seals to let oil in leaving debris out, I tought it made sense...you'll always have a certain amount of oil get passed the seal, look at our idler bearings how they get contaminated with WATER melting from the ice build-up...
 
Enough oil gets by the seal to give it proper lubrication while keeping out any metal fillings. Install as the book says with seal facing you.

That is only instructions for re-assembly, not regular maintenance.
By design ball bearings need to be bathed in lube, like the sealed bearings. They are not needle bearings that will live in just a light mist...
I didn't take any chances, since I flushed all the grease out in the parts washer before I caught on, so I repacked it with grease just like a sealed bearing. Don't want any issues at 120+ MPH.
