When i went to check my chiancase oil level it smelt burnt when i pulled the dip stick out. My ouestion is can i just drain and flush the chaincase or should i take it apart and clean it. I dont know how hard it would be to hook the reverse back up. I used to drain the case, blow it out with compressed air and refill on my other sleds never had a yamaha apart, can i reuse the gasket? Is it an o-ring type. my sled is a 06 rtx w/rev. it has 1200 miles on it. thanks ahead of time ,Lee

how's the gear oil level right now? is it down?
Very simple procedure to open the chain case up and it won't hurt the gasket at all. PM me if you have any questions.

Lee, it won't hurt it to just drain the oil. After riding bring it in and drop it, as long as it has been run and warm, you will drain all contaminants out. If you feel like taking the cover off, the rubber gasket is reusable if you do.

Some guys have had problems with gasket seal after changing gears !
Sleds that have not been touched have had less problems !
Drain oil and change as Mike says and you really dont need to remove cover unless your changing gears !
06 models have a smaller surface on the rubber gasket than the newer ones.
I have been told that Yamaha has updated
the cover on newer models

Thanks alot guys i really like this site alot. I had yamahas for 15 years and just came back 3 years ago when the apex came out, couldn't be happier , by the way the oil level was still at the full line.

Thanks SharkAttak i did deside to go w/ 100% synthetic gear oil, i live on a 22 mile long lake and thought that would be my best choice. Alot of long fast pulls on the throttle. Any suggestions on what brand and does it have a viscosity on the bottle? 
It needs to have to have GL-3 specs but I believe most synthetics have a GL-4 rating so it is covered. Do not over fill it too much oil will cause more heat.
