ok i changed the cam chain tensioner now it will idle but rough it will rev right up but now it will come down to 2500 for 10 sec then drop till 1400 ish and run rough pops through the air breather some times . never did this before always ran smooth. does anyone think that one of the cam gears jumped a tooth??? or what else would cause this problem
thanks Jim

Probably is the cams out of time. Had it happen to me also after replacing my tensioner. Mine would not idle unless you gave it throttle. It also occasionally backfired thru carbs, but ran fine when driving. If that is the case you will have to remove the tensioner again, get things lined up and re-install tensioner. NOT FUN!!

Did you rotate it in the proper direction to TDC before removing the tensioner? I've done a couple of these tensioners and have had no problems.
Seeing how several people have reported problems with the timing after they change the tensioner I would recommend removing the rocker cover when doing the replacement. It's the only way to be absolutely sure the timing is correct when the chain tensioner is reinstalled. It's a little extra work but could save you several hours if the timing jumps.
