check your exhaust donuts...

Well the exhaust donut job is completed and it went without a hitch thanks to the heads up from you guys about the rusted allens. Alot of break away and heat and they turned right out with the allen socket. The clamp bolts were rusted quite badly too but came out with a little time of oil on them. After trying the vice grip thing on compressing the clamps I opted to loosen the rear muffler bolts, slid the exhaust back, installed the donuts and finally using a 2"x4" between the rear grab bar and muffler to jam the exhaust on the headers..worked like a charm but still took 2 guys...On another note the grizzly 660 used for plowing has lost it's exhaust donuts too so at least Yamaha has consistency in their crappy sub contractor for the donuts... :o|

Another option is drill the allen bolts out and use socket head screw, with the socket head in the tunnel and a lock washer and nut on top. It's easy to reach in the tunnel with an allen wrench to hold the cap screw, while someone removes the nut on top. Not ideal, but that's what I did last night on the Apex. Looks like the same deal as the Vector. These things need to be made of something else.

check your exhaust donuts

Took mine on the '06 Nytro apart today. The good thing, 7000 miles and they look like new. The bad thing, I had to take it all apart to find out. I was lucky all my bolts came right out. Now I get to put it all back together tomorrow.

After 4000 miles on my 2008 Vector LTX, my exhaust donuts have very little wear on them. Since I have everything apart now I will replace them anyway. But I wonder why some have extreme wear and mine look very good. There is a little bit of wear on the PTO side donut but the others look nearly new. I guess once I change them they should be good for at least another 6000 miles. I bet I could have gone 8k on mine before they were blown out.

IMO - just like other items on Yamaha's....they could have a couple of different vendors or they changed vendors on the donuts. Or oil tanks. Or clutch weights.

There's just no pattern (miles wise) on the stuff that wears out or breaks.

I put my exhaust clamps on today and they are tight, not loose like some have commented so I saw no reason to grind any material from the spacer. Just an FYI.

Replacing the donuts isn't a terrible job but I doubt it will ever be as quick as 1-2 hours for me.

I had 14000 klms before I had to replace the donuts on a 05 Vector
then at 16000 klms the pipes started to leak at flex part and had to replace the 3 pipes

metallicat,
did you drill out the rivets or find another way to get the donuts out.
I bet the next one you do will be less than 2 hours now that you did one.
I like to use a couple cordless drill/drivers and /or air powered ratchets to move the job along alot faster.

Hey snoway. Yes I had to drill out the support rivits. That was the only way I could get the bugger to slide back far enough. Good tip and thanks for the help the other day!

2006 RS Nytro - 6000kms, took about and found donuts were fine, replaced them anyways as I had it ripped apart.

I chose to grind a bit off the clamp and fill the clamp with ultra-copper gasket.

changed my donuts for the first time today (with 10k+ miles) and it was obviously due a long time ago :p
the remaining of the donuts fell by just touching them. (yeah...they were really due) its a pretty long job too.

Has any after market company come up with a better than stock dog-nut??????????? If so who !!!! MM.
