Checking the Chain case oil '06 venture

Hey, so I apologize for this being a newb question:
When you check the motor oil, one is suppose to unscrew the dipstick, clean it, re-insert (only to the threads), remove it again to check the oil.

is this the same process for the chain case? What i mean is: do you set the chain case dipstick in up until the rubber stopper touched the case and this is the correct level or do you seat it into the case? it isn't really clear from the manual.
