I noticed on my first ride Friday that after I backed off the trailer and put it in forward, my chain case clunked when it engaged?

I never noticed this last year but again, this was my first ride so maybe I just wasn't use it?

The sled is an 08 Vector and I adjusted the chain finger tight and have the correct amount of oil in there.
It was also idling at 1500 give or take but the clunk seemed louder/more noticable than last year?

Any thoughts?

Pretty sure it's normal Irv. Seems like mine will clunk sometimes and then not. Inconsistent but normal.

If you where to see how the reverse gear fits inside of the lower gear you would understand.....this is normal . Its the two gears engaging again. Hope this helps.

Remember, the chaincase tension should be finger tight and then back off 1/4 turn.

Thanks guys, good to know!

To be honest, I hate adjusting my chain tension using this finger only method.

I also own a 95 XLT and I use to remove the cover annually so I could actually see it. (before I installed a reverse kit)

I used just the finger method (with the cover off) and it was very easy to get too much chain tension using the finger method only so it makes me leary using the same method on my Vector.

Just out of curiousity and with that being said above, in your opinion, with the clunk I am noticing,(pretending something is wrong?) would you think the chain is too tight or too loose?

all 4 of our vectors and our phazer do it. even our 380 and 600 renegade with the dual rotation engine would clunk, even our formula deluxe 500 with manual reverse simular to a vector. they all clunk. most important is to put it into gear and wait for it to grab. dont mash the throttle and really clunk the chaincase. reverse to forward is more noticable though. and yes, finger tight then backoff quarter turn is perfect. finger tight is too much. in manual reverse sleds theres alot of stuff in there that rides inside of eachother and do not fit tight. so its gunna clunk no matter what.

Even if the "clunk" is not coming fom the chaincase.... almost all sleds will have the noise of the drivers on the axle shaft changing directions from reverse back to forward .....
