clunking on my suspension

I have a 07 Apex GT and sometimes notice a kind of clunking coming from the undercarrage at low speeds when going over small bumps. I am not sure if I am having some sort of racheting or what is going on. I don't think it is racheting because I do not notice any of the noise at higher speed or when I am hard on the throttle.

It could be ice build up or something I guess. I cannot see anything visually that idicates there is a problem but thought maybe someone else had experienced this.

It is the transfer rod, and it is normal. You would swear that the skid is falling apart some days, but somehow stays together.

Part of it could be the rebound adjustment on the EC. I adjusted my rebound on my '06, and rarely hear the noise. If it were the limiter strap, every sled would have the same noise. You can definately make adjustments to greatly reduce that noise.
The noise is from the suspension slamming too hard against it's full extension. It's much like a screen door slamming shut. You can adjust that little screw on the closure to soften the hit.

Nate, do you have a suggestion for a starting point on the rebound? I have not messed with the rebound on the rear suspension but have the fronts dialed in nicely.

What you are telling me make perfect sense because that is exactly how it sounds and the fact that it is only noticable at low speed in the bumps does indicate that kind of problem. I had thought that maybe it was the limiter strap being snaped like one of the guys suggested since I did take it up one hole and do not have as much slack in it when I sit on the sled.

I will try to adjust the rebound and see if that makes it better. The important thing is that it sounds like it is normal and I do not have a problem.

Thanks again guys. I appreciate all your help.

Brad,

I also was concerned about that same noise on my '07 Apex GT when I first rode it slow over bumps.

After I set my weight transfer at maximum (I did this for drag racing and liked it so much I left it there), and added more rebound dampening (for big bump riding) I noticed that the noise is now gone.

I am not sure which adjustment eliminated the noise since I made both adjustments at the same time.

The limiter strap is rubber, and can't make that loud of a noise.
The best thing I can tell you is to take the right sized tools with you. I'm not near my sled, but I think it's just a flat blade screwdriver, and when you run into a trail that you hear the noise, adjust the rebound, and run the trail again. I believe you will turn the screw clockwise.
Everybody is different. I usually ride so that when I run into rutted out trail like that, I stand with my knees bent and let my legs take some of the abuse. This helps to soften the ride, but not everybody does that. Most just sit there and take it, and then complain about it.
Adjust it just far enough so the noise goes away/ Any further and you will actualy make the shock too stiff on the rebound, and won't extend all the way to be ready for the next bump! You could acutally drastically reduce travel if the rebound is too tight, and end up with more bottoming, and less of the thud you are trying to fix.

Same noise here on my 07 Attak with low miles so it can't be because anything is wore out. I just wrote it off as normal suspension responding to short interval bumps at slow speeds.

Thanks, I will give it a try and see if I can get it to work.

It's virtually impossible to get every sled set up perfectly for every rider when they go out the dealers' door. Some sleds mak make more noise than others given different riding stlyes, trail condidtions, rider weights, etc., etc....
I just wish that ever new sled sold came with a TY sticker, so more people could truly learn to tune and tweak their sleds to perfection!
Have faith, we'll get you fixed up!!!
Most dealers don't get into the fine tuning like most TY'ers!!!!

I love the sled. I have the rest of the suspension dial in and it rides fabulous. If I can get the noise out of it at slow speeds I will like that. If not I will live with it since it is common and does not hurt anything. I was just hoping that I didn't have some sort of problem with the suspension. Now that I know what it is I can relax and enjoy the sled.

Thanks again.

Brad

Hopefully now you can call it perfect!!!
