Clutch is way too abrupt - how do I fix?

So I have a 2011 RS Vector GT, 100% stock. The sled has about 700 miles on it now, like new.

At low speeds, around 12mph, the clutch engages and disengages very, very abruptly. The whole snowmobile lurches and you can hear the drivetrain engage / disengage.

I like to ride fast, but unfortunately on whooped-up trails or tight turns I often find myself trying to smoothly maintain this speed...not possible.

Is there a softer spring or something I can do? Maybe fix the rattle at idle while I'm at it?

www.barnofparts.com offers a "soft start" spring and it works! Inexpensive way to change the engagement RPM.

As the the rattle, http://www.schmidtbrosmotorsports.com/ offers a very lost cost clutch weight spacer kit. Your rattle won't go completely away, but it'll improve it anywhere from 20-80% (my guess)...50% or better seems common. Schmidt Bros. also offers their Comfort Clutch kit but it comes with different weights which they claim you should have. I have their kit on my 05 Vector and I can't say I noticed anything other than the softer engagement.

I have the Barn Of Parts soft spring on my 14 Vector and love it.

One other thing to check is the chaincase chain tensioner. The proper adjustment is finger tight then back off 1/4 turn. You MIGHT have a bit too much slop in the chain.

I also installed the barn of parts soft spring. I found it greatly reduces surging and track spin at slow speeds and when starting off.

BOP soft spring takes all the jerkyness out of the 3 cylinder.

I have one in all 3 Vectors, 1050 & 973 engines.

I even had one in my Apex when I owned it. All I really noticed on the 4 cylinder was lower engagement, that engine is pretty smooth all around.

I just bought a 2012 Vector LTX and the first thing that I noticed was the abrupt clutch engagement. The clutch also had a rattle.
I disassembled the complete clutch, cleaned, and changed from a WWW primary spring to a White Silver White primary spring.
Now the clutch engages at around 3000 and the rattle is gone. I think that the rattle was a result of the dirty clutch.
Look at a Yamaha spring chart and it shows many different springs. You can adjust your clutches to your needs.
I did the same with my 2011 Apex XTX and it really helped the clutch work.

No kit or aftermarket parts needed, get Y-P-Y Spring for Vector - 90501-581L5-00. A quick 5 minute change on the primary and you will have a brand new ride.

One of the easiest changes and best result I've had in many my many years of sledding.
You can search the forum for the spring number to read up more on the topic.

Looks interesting. I have used that spring in my Apex in the past.
I installed a WSW in my Vector , but have not had a chance to use it.
The YPY has even less preload and slightly less total force.
I will look forward to trying the the YPY after trying the WSW.
Thanks for the information.

I put a Yamaha Y-Y-Y in my 2011 reventure and love it. Engages lower and much smoother. Found stock primary spring a little abrupt and bad for backing into garage. Also find it re reverses better in snow, as it used to spin a little with stock.
