Are there any clutch kit's for low elevations yet, not costing $450?? I am leaving the gears the way they are. Am I on the right track for 0-2500'
What are you guys doing that are riding at this elevation?
I still want to be able to add the weight when I go to the mountains with out having to drill.
Thanks

.It takes 30 minutes for me to remove a set of primary weights & drill out the rivets. When you go higher in elevation you allways have to lighten the primary weights; never add weight. Sorry; you either have to buy an extra set of weights or drill out the ones you have when you go out west.

I'm leaving the gearing alone for now but my dealer has given me the kit. They told me Yamaha was reimbursing them for it?? I didn't argue with them. So they are changing the clutch spring and adding pins to the weights and I have the gear and chain if I want to change them.

Can someone fill me in on why the clutching needs to be adjusted for lower elevations ? Is it an EFI thing, or is it just to make it more trail friendly with lower engagement and better power curve ? Just curious...

One thing I know about the elevation changes is this. Stock setup at low elevevations = no fun. I tried it with the stock set up in the Phazer last year and then changed it as soon as I could. The Nytro won't see the snow before I make the changes this year. It is a combination of clutch and gearing changes and because of the gear change, the chain aslo has to be changed.

Low elev makes more HP- thus heavier clutch weight/ spring components. Thats also the reason for the gear changes. The MTX comes set-up for hi-elev ie; 8000'-10000' lower gearing to compensate for less power......lighter clutch components to let the motor spin up tp RMP because of the less power it makes at hi-elev.NyTrOMaNIaC said:Can someone fill me in on why the clutching needs to be adjusted for lower elevations ? Ahhh, I see I see. Thanks for the explanation, totally makes sense.

You're welcome. Thats the general idea anyway, however... there are way to many variables that are and can be applied as well. It's a science that can not be fully mastered

Shouldn't your dealer set it up for your area when purchasing?

Dealer should set it up. Totally free at my dealer out here. Yes, sled comes set for 8,000-10,000 feet. There is a nice break down of every elevation set up range in the 2008 Yamaha Update Manual. I would assume your dealer would make a copy for you if you asked.
I bought an MTX and need to set it up for the 4,000-6,500 feet range. I will be needing all the rivets (inner, center, and outer), Primary spring, Top Gear, and chain. All free to me from the dealer. I assume yamaha will re-emburse them for this. Not everyone is going to ride at 10,000 feet with this thing. Just like if you bought a short track version for out here in the west, they are set for darn near sea level from the factory, and if you bought it and lived in the west, you would think yamaha would set you up for success. Push your dealer to contact Yamaha to get it switched for free.
Good Luck,
Steve

I have my dealer checking this out for us Canadians. Not sure if we get the same program.

from what i understand, they will set it up how you like it one time. generally you do not get to keep the stuff the dealer had to remove or change to set up your sled for elevation.
you are alot better off if you ride both high and low elevations to leave the high alt stuff in and buy a chain, top gear, rivets and primary spring.
the low alt set up is cheaper. if you want another set of primary weights so you dont have to keep drilling, pounding and switching rivets, hang on to your shorts as yamaha wants 130.00 per arm. ski

They expect the consumer to pay for the kit and its installation here.

Ski, how do ya figure that the low stuff is cheaper? 20t gear costs less than 22t gear. 68l chain is less than a 70l chain. The low elev primary spring I'm not sure about... but my dealer only charged me $19 to keep my hi elev spring. Other then that, only nine rivits for the low elev set-up?skidooboy said:from what i understand, they will set it up how you like it one time. generally you do not get to keep the stuff the dealer had to remove or change to set up your sled for elevation.
