I have an 09 Apex Gt that is showing code 84. Rpms don't go down and is activating this sensor. Anyone have any ideas as to why?

Code 84 is the TORS (Throttle Override System). The system cannot detect the throttle is returning to the 'home' (idle) position. The culprit is usually a loose connection @ the throttle lever but follow the wires & look for chafing, repair loose &/or chafed wires as required. TORS could be bypassed on older Yamahas by disconnecting the inline plug, reversing the connections & reconnecting the plug, I can't recall if this is a possibility on the Apex.

Mine came up beginning of last year. I adjusted the throttle cable back to spec. Ran fine from then on.

Yes it will prevent it from starting. I have a TORS issue now and have had a few of them in past years. I have found two things happen with mine. If there is too much moisture in the trailer, it can throw the TORS (haven't narrowed down where the issue is with that yet as it is very infrequent). Secondly, if you have trailered your sled on an open trailer and got virtually ANY corrosion under the hood, the throttle cable will stick down by the injectors and thereby cause a TORS issue. This is a simple fix with some lubricating spray, but if it gets bad (and for safety sake) replace any heavily corroded springs or linkages. Usually when this happens, its an easy diagnosis because the throttle won't return when depressed.

You need 1/8" play on the thumb throttle trigger or the tors will activate. Check the washers on the thumb trigger as they may not allow the cable to return correctly. Make sure throttle cable hasn't been pulled tight in the bundle going down the handle bar. There has also been talk that if the speed sensor doesn't pick up the gear it sometimes causes this to trip. Not sure about that one though. I've battled this on and off and it has always gone back to the tightness of the cable.

Thanks for the additional advice. I fought with the speed sensor already this year when the driveshaft bearing blew up and the speedo gear then ate up the sensor. That had a speed sensor code with it though and sensor has been replaced so J tend to agree it is in the throttle cable somewhere.

also if you have any ice build up on the piviot point of the thumb throttle it will trip it too had this a few times after freezing rain.

The sled will start when the TORS is triggered but it will not rev beyond 3000rpm.
I just had a code 84 TORS issue on my Attak. Every time I pressed the throttle it would flash code 84 and not rev above 3000rpm.
Even when I bypassed the TORS it still would flash the code and not rev up!??
I put the guage cluster into diagnostic mode and found the throttle switch [item 24] would indicate off even with throttle open and even with the TORS bypassed which takes the throttle switch right out of the system]! Obviously the ECU was being signalled the throttle switch was always closed so it would trigger the TORS.
I traced my problem to the black/yellow wire from the throttle switch to the ECU being broken somewhere in the wiring harness. I spliced in a new wire right from the ECU to the connector in rubber pouch and this solved my problem.

Bob,
Did you have code 15 at any point with this? Mine is now showing both 15 and 84 and will not start. I've checked throttle cable adjustment and it looks good, plenty of play in it. I recently had the grounding block issue and took care of that but now this!!! I'm going to go check that wire now, but anyone with any other insight would be appreciated. This sled is kicking my #*$&@ this year...

No I never had code 15...only 84 and only when I moved the throttle.
Code 15 is supposed to fail safe to throttle switch on so it should still start.
Try bypassing the TORS and see what happens.
