okay so yesterday I started a lil science experiment, personally, living on a farm all my life I know what oil to run in what, what viscosity, all that stuff. here in sasakatchewan we have a facebook club called "306 truck club" now of course everyone wants to know what fuel conditioner, what type and grade of oil, the same discussion every forum known on the internet has. I couldn't believe the amount of people saying they run 15-40 in their diesel engines... it was -39 this morning, that's just crazy. without a pan heater that oil is not flowing, never mind being sucked up a huge pick up tube these big cummins and duramax's have. now your probly wondering why im posting this on here, well I had .5 of a liter of 0-30 semi synthetic yamalube (grey bottle). so I figured I'd post up on here and show you felllers how this oil we run in our sleds flows at -39 celcius. now I know this test is probly the least scientific thing anyone could do, but I had to give these guys on this club a visual of whats going on in their engines.

That is very interesting for sure and pretty much confirms what we already knew. Now I wonder if the full synthetic would have been better?

surprisingly a lot of people must not know, I was in the city last month and a kid, well he musta been 20 somthin, was buyin gallons and gallons of 10-40. I asked, what you changing oil in. he said his sunfire. I was like, well first you got 3 gallons too much, and you got too heavy of oil, 5-30 or 0-30 for these winters. im not too sure who these kids fathers are, but if your unsure of what to change your oil with, take it to the dealer or a quick lube...or read the manual.

It is surprising but I guess if I was never shown by my Father, who thankfully knew a thing or two, and was likely shown by his Father as well, I may not know any better myself?
My buddy is a mechanic and he said he could easily rip off about 80% of his customers as they know absolutely nothing about auto's or anything else mechanical for that matter.
I was at a gas station once and seen a guy offer anyone $5 bucks if they could put air in his almost flat tire!
I couldn't believe it but he was serious! The mechanic did it for free.
Take a listen to this video, it proves how easy it is and why unknowing people get ripped off every day.

try the DMO 0w40 instead of the 5w40 rotella. 5w40 rotella is around -30c pour point with the 0w40 DMO is -57c and is tested and proven in our fleet of 5 freightliners with a couple trucks reaching 400,000kms. 122.00 a pail plus enviro and taxes of course. 5w30 DMO gold is a semi synthetic with a pour point of -36c. The 0w40 full synthetic actually protects better than our 5w30 @100c kinematic viscosity cSt and meets cj-4 classifications. A lot of people will actually run 0w40 year round as it has tested as durable enough to compare with our 15w40 mineral based product.

nice to see the yamalube still moving in -40c. That's all Ive ever used.

I am not ignorant to oil weights and when to use what but I've never seen an actual comparison like this, kinda eye opening . I've always ran 5w-30 in the cars in the winter and usually synthetic or a blend. This makes me wonder if I should switch to 0w -30 for the winter months. Thanks for sharing

I just switched my truck over to 0w30 redline from 5w30 M1 and after seeing this I'm glad I did. I always new but to see it is unreal. I'm heading out to my barn to see what I have to do a test myself. Thanks for the post.

A pan heater is an even better idea. Then the heat gets the oil and rises up thru the block.

Its a flat pad and you can get them in a lot of sizes - or did I miss the point? - 4 stroke sleds of course. You could stick it to the oil res too I suppose, but Id stick with the pan.
