It was -7 F yesterday when I started the RTX and it took 2 turns of the key this time, which was no big deal. What concerned me was the fact that when it did start , it siounded like it was knocking and rattling for a few seconds due to lack of oil. I was just getting ready to hit the kill switch and it settled down and idled normally. I was worried about spinning a bearing or something. Has anyone experienced this in cold weather starts? Thanks.

They all do it. Some worse than others. Primary clutch + primary gear reduction unit tend to be noisier in the cold. Colder than 0F make it much louder.
Depending on your mileage (if you have more than about 3,000mi)you may want to shim the sliders on the spider of your primary and reduce it. It makes a big difference. (There are several threads on this.)

It will not harm anything. Let it idle until you feel warmth in the running boards then go on your way.

When it is broke in switch to FULL synthetic oil.It will give you much better startup lube in cold weather.

Yup, synthetic helps a lot. My 03 RX1 sounded like the valves were coming out the top of the motor if started below -10. I now run Mobil 1 0w30 and at -20 it rattles for maybe 2 seconds and then quiets right down. It's just lack of oil in the top end until the oil pump can get it up there. Can't be good for it, especially with high lift cams like these motors have.

Well that makes me feel a little better. I've only got just under 1000 miles so I was planning on the Mobile 1 synthetic. thanks guys. Craig
