Cold Starting issues

My 2007 Phazer is a pain to start when the engine is cold.
I had my whole machine apart, engine out two seasons ago for a reverse system failure and some other dealer caused issues. I replaced the battery for this season since it was the original oem part since the sled was bought.

It will crank over on the 4 or 5th key turn. I turn the key a few times to prime the fuel pump-this helps a little. My concern is, since everybody has had copius problems with these notorious starters I am wondering if i should invest in a new one. Obviously not now, but next summer. The starter does not click-which I think would be the solenoid. It does crank the motor and there is no trouble starting it if it was warm.

The machine has always been a pain to start to some degree. I do appreciate the old choke or primer found on 2 strokes a whole lot more now. Spark plugs where changed when the engine was apart.

Does anyone know what the part number is for the Iridium plugs?

Is the problem that it take 4 or 5 turn of the starter or you have to turn the key to the start position 4 or 5 times to get the starter to turn?

They all seem to crank over hard.
Mine's had the update done, I do the key "prime" thing 2X and it still does it. Will whirl for awhile then start- just learned to live with it's personality and talk nicer to it when starting.

It doesn't like being called a stubborn f%&in' piece of S^*t though.

It cranks eveytime I turn the key, it's just it takes 4 or 5 key turns to start it. Seems Porkchop has the same issue as me. It may well just be the sled since it's always been slow to start. It only take 4 or 5 pulls on my vmax and its 13 years old.

Just wanted to see if maybe it could be the beginning of starter failure.

While its cranking over how many rpms is it turning?

Not sure Cannondale, I'll have to get back to you on that. What is the normal Idle for the Phazer.
With my SBM comfort clutch installed it idles around 2500-2650rpm. How can I adjust idle? I bet it requires a pile of disassembly.
I think in Yamaha's endless goal to compact this sleds guts to make it perform better, they forgot about ease of maintenance.

actually, the idle adjustment is easy.

Warm up the sled until it idles down (not just until the red light goes out). Then in between the front left a arms there is a rubber plug (If you are sitting on the sled its on the left, looking at the front of the sled its on the right.

Using a Phillips screw driver turn the screw behind the rubber plug in or out to adjust the idle.

Your aiming for 1800-1850 for best reverse engagement.

I can't remember what I see the RPM's are at while the starter is cranking.

Mine has had the starter replaced (YES warranty ) and it still does it.....

When my starter failed trail side it just started whirling over SOO slow it was like the battery wasn't charged- started the sled that time then 1/2 hour later nothing at all but a relay click. Pull start rest of the day/ last month of riding.
Charged battery to no avail when home, did nothing.

Excell's deemed bad starter and warranty covered it after the season.
