Is it commom for the torsion spring to rub through the plastic retainer?

When I took everything apart, I noticed that the torsion spring rubbed through the plastic retainer, idler wheel mount, and half the mounting bolt.

Is this right?

doubt it. never seen this

Not normal but it is a wear piece that needs to be replaced every so often also a little grease or a spray lube can help. You do need to relace both of them

Thanks, I changed with new and threw the old parts away before I took this picture. I was pretty amazed at how it ate through...not much longer and it would have made it through the mounting bolt and the whole thing would have been disastrous.

Both sides were pretty bad. I'm glad I found it when I did.

At about 4500 miles I had to replace mine. They were wearing on the outboard sides of the plastic guide as if the torsion spring was not centered in the guide.

I noticed the same thing with mine this fall, not as extreme as yours. I ordered 2 new blocks and the brackets to update to the '10 spec. I still haven't done it though, need to get that done, thanks for the reminder.

def check these every season, mine will be due this summer i would think. 4600 miles

They do wear out. Mine were changed to 2011 updates and have worn. Likely change again next year. But will go to 2013 updated parts. Yamaha added a trap over the top so they can't accidentally flip over while riding and let the arm jump out.
