Cracked Front arm on my mono

While checking my sled over before a planned trip this weekend, I found the left, front, upper arm on the mono skid broke at the weld, and the tube that runs across (where the control rod attaches) snapped in half..it broke just to the right of where the control rod attaches....I am hoping that one of our shop techs (I work for a heavy truck dealer) can weld it up, so I can go on my trip friday...(keeping my fingers crossed)

This may sound dumb...but while looking at it..my wheels started turning....I wondered if I couldn't just remove the control rod (would it wheelie too much??...no steering??)
and place a piece of tubing over the left upper rod, and duct tape it (that piece is bolted at the top and bottom..so it shouldn't move much)...I know dumb idea...but desperate times call for desperate messures....this is the one trip we take every year...hate to not go (would be the first time I missed in 15 yrs).

Also anybody have a used front arm complete in decent shape?? In or near north central wisconsin?? For cheap??..lol (I have a wife, who limits my snowmobile spending...or I'd go nutz every winter...lol)

You can run without the rod in, but I would not did it with out weldding it.

I noticed that I had some broken welds on mine a couple of years ago while I was greasing my suspension the night before a weekend trip. I pulled it out (it came out in two pieces!) and I had a buddy weld it up as a temporary fix to get me through the weekend trip.

My Yamaha dealer replaced it later with the newer stronger version under warranty. Yamaha even offered to reimburse me for the cost of the temporary welding "fix" but my buddy did it for free.

That W arm is a PITA. Mine has had all the reinforcements done and it just breaks somewhere else. Last trip the cross bar that the control rod mounts to ripped clean out. Good thing it didn't spear the track. I ended up sectioning out the trouble spot, cutting the said piece out of another w arm I had laying around and turning down some one inch round bar. Then I drilled out the end plate on one side and pounded the round bar through the entire length of that lower cross bar and had it welded up.

My welder guy mis-aligned the angle on the control rod mounts or I marked it wrong, who knows. So then I ground off the existing control rod mounting taps and fabbed some out of steel twice as thick. Welded those bad boys on and bam... she's fixed. I cant see this breaking again at this spot but I'm sure it will somewhere else now. If it wasn't for the stupid mono, the apex would be a very reliable machine.

I have had no issues (so far) with the updated design front arm that my dealer installed under warranty two years ago.

Has anybody experienced breakage on the new design front arm or is it just the older design that breaks frequently?

It is very rare to have the beefed up front arms break if welded and gussetted in the right places.

Are you referring to a Half Baked "beefed up" front arm or the newer updated design stock OEM front arm that my dealer installed?

I was referring to Half Baked Beef Up Kit reinforced arms. I'm sure improved Yamaha front arms are great too, i just don't have any experience with them.

Do you have a package for the TY members on a beef up kit and coating? I suppose I could have hit up your website if you have prices listed there.

Let's say I have an 07 Apex Gt with enough miles on it to warrant a look over of all the welds and a powder coat to finish it off nice. What should that run me and what prep work should I do to get it to you?

Is it common to powder coat the rails as well? Should we leave it assembled? I would assume we should pull it all apart and only ship you the components that need the beef up and coating.

What can we expect once we get the parts back? Do we need to scrape coating out of threads, or holes that bolts will go through before assembly?

Sorry for all the questions, but this may be what many are thinking that have not taken their skid out, let alone taken it apart for this sort of procedure.

The skid on your home page kicks #*$&@!! For those of us with an 07 in that dark cherry red, is Translucent Red over Silver the color to go with?

Send only the parts that will be powdercoated. Had my arms powdercoated translucent red over silver with the rails done in black. WOW! Halfbaked does incredible work. If i knew how to post pics i would show you.
