2011 Apex se with terrible backshift.
Any ideas on easy fix or is it time for a clutch kit??

max RPM varies from 10 000 to 10 800
too speed is only 103 RPM (I am a heavy rider so probably loose some speed there)
When hitting brake & back on throttle it is not a smooth engagement.

If you lock up the track, then back on the throttle, the secondary will bang the belt back up. If you are not locking the driveline up, then yes, it should be a smoother transition.

Have you driven one of these 4-strokes brand new before? They tend to be pretty tight at first and it takes somewhere from 1000-2000 miles before they loosen up.
a clutch kit would be the answer. If you are an agreesive rider and want to tap the brake or let off the throttle and have it shift quickly, you'll want a clutch kit. I'm very happy with the clutcn kit I bought. I think the back shifting was changed more than anything else.

After getting some extended experience on mine, I noticed the same thing when Up north last time. I wasn't locking up the track, just letting off the throttle, no brake, rolling into the corner, then back on throttle on exit, and clutch was real clunky with re-engagement. You could tell it needed to build the RPM's in order to re-engage. Not smooth. I'm used to a different feel, so I thought there was something wrong. Had a thread started on this last week and concluded this is fairly normal Apex clutching. If I keep the sled for any length of time, I might be interested in a clutch kit myself.

on both my sleds, when comming into a corner fast i don't let out of the throttle all the way... basically keep the primary engaged and use engine brake as my"slow down", i will even keep clutch engaged slight while using break... you can really get these things to take corners fast... real fast, but the min i let off and "coast" slightly and go hard on throttle i get the same conditions as above... its just in the driving with stock clutching...

I don, think it,s the clutching as much as taking the slack back up in the chaincase. When you put the brakes on, all the slack goes against the gears. Then when you accelerate again the slack is taken back up before your track starts turning. I feather the throttle to keep the slack tight and probably wouldn,t use my brake a half dozen times in a 150 mile ride. I do tap my brake lite to warn the rider behind me of a big bump. It takes a while to get use to the engine braking, but once you do, you,ll probably like it. It took me about a month to get use to it.

If you are used to the Apex with out the new engine braking reductions system that could be what you are feeling? I have a 2007 Attak gt and have grown very fond of the engine braking. The 2011's have the engine braking reduction and I can imagine that if you had a 2010 or older, it would feel like you have no back shifting if you bought the 2011? Just a thought.

I think so.
I miss the engine braking aand was used to keeping my thumb on the throttle at all times.
The 2011 seems unnatural to be on the brake and on the throttle at the same time but I think that is what it is going to have to come to.
I am noting rough back shifting as well and do not care for it. Clutching is good while on the throttle but notchy at lower speeds after letting off and reapplying throttle.
