Most of the winter I've noticed a dark oil mist all over my oil tank and it keeps getting thicker and thicker. Any idea where it's coming from? Thanks.

Yea between the brake dust and belt dust these things are pretty hard to keep shiny under the hood. Funny too as I don't use the brakes that much at all.

Check your upper chain chase seal. At high speeds with a slightlly over serviced chain case, oil can weep from the seal and be slung onto the oil tank.

Darn, just washed my sled before and scrubbed most of it off yesterday. Lol, don't use my brake much at all either!
It left the sponge all black and oily and was really hard to scrub off. Seemed to build up over the season, maybe a light layer of oil on the tank from maintenance mixed with brake dust I guess maybe.

You might be onto something, what do you mean about upper chaincase seal and over serviced? Do you mean the gasket? The chaincase oil has only been changed once. Seems to be a real thick oil, which would make sense if it's chaincase oil.

This is my best guess as well. I've seen this happen if you had your chaincase apart the little O-ring may have gotten lost or re-installed incorrectly. It is a tiny little thing.

Ahh ok, thanks. I'll keep an eye on it and see if I can trace it back to the chain case.
