Ok guys, I did not have a particularly great weekend this weekend. The wife and I drove 350 miles, got to Shawinigan Quebec at midnight only to find our room reservation was completely screwed up and I didn't actually HAVE a room. Finally found one, in another hotel and got to bed by 1. By morning I was over it. Got up, had breakfast, unloaded my RX-1 and the Wife's Vector and headed out. Noticed while warming her sled up that it would turn over slow. (at first I didn't think much of it since it was about 10 below. (Fahrenheit) Anyway, it started finally and ran fine for a few minutes and then died. I restarted it and it was ok. We got on and crossed the street, and my wife pointed out that her speedometer and odometer and the rest of the display was not on. I thought, "Well, it's pretty cold and I have read where a few guys had this problem, maybe it will come back in a few minutes." Then I said to her, "Shut if off and restart it." When she shut it off it would NOT restart. The engine would not even turn over. About 20 minutes later we tried again and it fired up, only to quite 1/4 mile down the trail. 30 minutes later it ran again, and this time I rode it and made sure to ride in as much powder as I could find because I was thinking that it was overheating. It died again LESS than 1/4 mile later. Bottom line is this. I think that the sled is running only on the battery, and as soon as the voltage drops, the display goes away and eventually the ignition fails and the sled quits. It isn't seizing up, because I can turn the primary clutch and it feels fine and makes no odd noises.
Anyway, no dealers open after NOON in Quebec, so we trailered it all the way home, and dropped it off at the dealer at 8 tonight. We called on the way and he said to just leave it behind the building, so we did.
Any clues? About the time I got home I wanted to shoot myself for not thinking to check any fuses, but when it happened I was really stuck on the overheating idea since the trails were pretty icy and cooling was tough to find.

The dispaly is voltage sensitive. If system voltage drops below a certain value the display will hibernate. Thus it is indicative of a voltage problem. The sled not running properly and quitting would draw on system voltage. As for sled not running again it could be electrical. One question is that when it was running did it perform normally. If it did I would concentrate on the electrical system. If it didn't then the electrical problem may be a by-product of the event.

Charge the battery.

I had my Vector start fine with no display (although it was cold, the battery was solid). While it was running, I pushed the emergency button and pulled it back out quickly and the thing blinked on and the engine kept running. I suspect that the switch is troublesome. Hasn't happened since.

If there is enough Battery power to START the sled, shouldn't the Stator be able to provide enough power to keep it running? I don't buy the dead battery thing. That would mean that if your battery dies and you get a jump start that it basically does nothing for you. That can't be true. Sure, if I charge the battery that will mask the problem for a while until it becomes weak again from carrying all the load like I think it is.

It would run great for a couple of minutes and eventually start to miss and then stall. It seems very much electrical to me.

Sorry to hear as a lot of us have new Vectors. It's a new sled with a full warranty. It's at the dealer so let him find out what the problem is.
As a side note, I do leave a Battery Tender on the machine when it's in the barn. Cheap insurance. Also, I don't belive the dealerships bring the batteries to full charge during set up. When I got mine home after taking delivery I put it on the Tender and it went into charge mode and took overnight to fully charge. You did say that it was slow to turn over. Even at 20 below the batteries in the RX-1 and Vectors are like small car batteries and have no problem spinning the motor when fully charged.
Let us know how this works out as we have the same machines.
So far it's been the noisy primary's and the TORS. Let's hope it's not an electrical gremlin.

I second the battery tender, it is almost a must, althought I personally use the optimate which is so easy to use because Yam gives you the rubber capped white plug that fits it perfectly.
As far as the machine not running past start up, your pilot jets might be plugged. This can happen if untreated gas sits in your carbs for a couple of months.

These batteries need to be FULLY charged on an Optimate battery charger. Optimate is the best. I have 3 battery tenders & they won’t bring back a severely discharged battery like an Optimate can. The Optimate has a desulphate feature which charges a battery at 24volts and brings back the dead ones.
Yamaha will generally only warranty a battery from a dealer that uses an Optimate 8. If Yamaha warranties a battery for a customer, they may require the dealer to send the original battery to Yamaha. Yamaha will put the battery on an Optimate 8 and if the battery passes & tests good, Yamaha will not pay dealer for the warranty claim.
For the same price as a Battery Tender, you can buy an Optimate from your Yamaha dealer & you can speed up your troubleshooting process.
These new batteries need to be fully charged before having a draw on them. If you take a new battery, install it in a new machine without fully charging it, the battery will create a memory which will limit it in reaching it’s maximum charge potential.
The Optimate has a special charge cycle which is designed to remove the batteries memory, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t.
If your machine was setup at the dealer by someone in a hurry, maybe your battery wasn’t completely charged? Most dealers have a minimum wage kid assembling our $10,000 machines, sad but true. Having a Good Dealer is almost as important to your buying decision as the brand of machine.
Our sleds are not like cars, they will not fully charge a battery by riding them, it took many years to convince me of this. They will only maintain a battery.

If the display acts up I would also check the connector at the back of the display. If it comes loose the sled won't run.
