I was riding Saturday night and looked down and my speedo read 0. My first though was panic as I have read about the speedo failure happening just prior to losing a drive bearing. We were 90 miles from where we dropped in new territory on some pretty rough trails that would have been difficult to tow my sled through. I stopped, shut everything off and restarted. The speedo still would read 0 and the warning light started flashing with code 42 - which I now see here is for the speed sensor.

After assessing our situation, I decided to ride it as far as I could. Not long after starting out, the speedo started working again and the warning light stopped flashing. It happened one more time after a stop to warm up. And, again, after riding a few hundred yards, the speedo started working again and the warning light stopped. Made it all the way back with no other issues.

Does this sound like a sensor/loose wire issue or am I about to lose that bearing???

If the speed sensor gets destroyed due to a drive bearing failure there is nothing intermittent about it in my experience.

When the bearing goes the drive axle shifts rearward and the speedo gear starts to rub on the pickup. It wears it right out and the speedo stops working.

If you have something intermittent going on, I would check out the wiring from the sensor and the connection into the rear of the instrument pod.

That was what I was hoping. After the speedo started working again and the warning light stopped flashing I felt a little more comfortable. We had been riding some pretty rough trails and bouncing around a lot. I will check the wiring.

Maybe some ice on the line? I think it was pretty cold there last weekend. Maybe warm the sled up in your garage to remove any ice.

How many miles on your sled?

It wasn't extremely cold but my reverse was slightly frozen when I started out in the morning.

Both times it happened was right after a gas or rest stop and it did clear up after the sled warmed up.

4800 miles on the sled. Did have the bearings checked prior to the season.
