Is it possible to remove the two outside wheels and put them between the rails with the stock setup? Or is that a special kit? And what are the advantages, if any, of only having two wheels between the rails?
If your constantly running Deep Pow then you should have no problem. But as for hard trail, I don't think it would be as good and in that senario more is better. And regardless you'll have to cut the rear axle sleeve, so no to running the stock set-up.

So what does 2 wheels inside the rails help with - in the mountains?
Vs 2 in 2 out.

Seams like it would boondocks side to side Boondocking with only two in the middle as the track will flex a bit more... Maybe I'm wrong but thats my first thought.

That's exactly right, by narrowing your lateral axis allows you take a tighter line. In other words for example a Deep Vee hull on a boat can carve harder/tighter than a Tri hull style of boat. Hope this helps......
