Possibly due to ice build-up or them just becoming loose. I would not remove them because it would be time consuming to put them back on if you ever decided to stud or sell your sled, and most of the ice build-up is on the suspension itself anyhow. Just grab them with your hand to see if they are loose or the rivets are broken. If not, leave them there.

If your not running studs take them out. With out studs there is no need for them to be there, gives you more room for a taller track. Save 20 or more pounds of ice with out them.
