I am reading these ECP filter posts from all over. The results people are seeing is really quite impressive. This of course brings up a question.
I ordered my Holtzman springs early on this summer and I ordered the YELLOW springs based on my elevation and of course at the time using the stock airbox. I am using them now with the ECP filters at elevation.
Now I see there are people at sea level using the silver springs with excellent results. Does Barry Holtzman need to make springs even lighter than the silvers for us guys who ride at elevation or can the silver springs be expected to cover such a wide range of elevations effectively?
I see Holtzman's latest add shows two sets of criteria for his carb springs. One WITH airbox and one WITHOUT the airbox. According to his add I should be using the RED springs at my elevation range with my ECP kit. I would sure like to see some more light shed on this subject. PB
Next time I have the opportunity, I am going to dynotest with no springs at all in the carbs. This of course is not recommended for real life riding but it will be interesting to see what happens. I had this same thought PB...I will let you know how I do. Maybe will have the chance to do it later this week.
I have had several conversations with Barry Holtzman on the subject of the ECP filter and his ATACC system. I ordered a set of Silver springs from him now and for sure you're going to find something that works even better.
I asked him about the low and mid range issue and he had some words of wisdom. He said I should turn up my pilot screws 1/2 turn to add more fuel to the bottom end. They were at 1 1/4 turns and I actually went to 2 since that is what the Yamaha service manual says. is this too high? Maybe the 1 3/4 he suggested would be perfect?
He also suggested putting my needles back into the stock postion. He started talking in square roots and inverses of things and I just said OK. It was something about the lack of vacuum with the airbox gone that there will be less airflow in the midrange so the needles shouldn't need to be raised?
He said to go to 162.5 mains since it was 3% more fuel than the 160's and try it and see how it works.
A fellow I spoke with using the LONG K&N filters is using 153.5 to 155 mains and loving it. He had installed 22.5 pilots though and his airscrews are at 1 1/4 turn from seated.
I just thought I'd share this with you. PB
