I have an 07 Rage and my secondary "floats" on the shaft. Is this the way it is suppposed to be? My friend has a 05 venture and he says his does not. He seems to be blowing belts way to quick, less than 500 miles.
What is the normal belt life for these 3 holers?

Yes it's supposed to do that. I've seen (OEM) belts last 5000+ miles.

His secondary should float like yours. That is likely his belt blowing problem. Get him to take of his secondary and reinstall it with the same washers & placement etc that you have and then he should be fine.
I just changed my belt at 7,000 km. Nothing wrong with it just time to change I figured.
I have only blown one Yamaha belt. Last year with 12,000 km on it on a friends Supercharged Apex at WOT over 112 mph. [Can't really blame that on the belt]
