My sled has about 500 mi on it. I towed another sled and smelled the belt burning. As soon as i smelled it i stopped. Anyway the sled never engaged as smoothly from that point on. I replaced the belt today at 700 mi and once again the drivetrain is smooth as butter. My question: When i inspected the belt there was only the most minor irregularity in it otherwise looked very good. Can a small imperfection make a large difference in clutch engagement?
In your case it sure seemed to. But all joking aside, it's easy to kill a belt under heavy strain/ loads. Guys commonly smoke belts loading their sleds onto trailers. Been there, done that.
