I have looked for the posts on dry gas for the last 20 minutes and cannot find anything. I know this was talked about. Sorry for going over this again. I will be in minus 20 degree weather next week and wondering should I use it and if so what should I use. Any help would be much appreciated.

Add about 5 oz. of any brand of ISOPROPYL alcohol to each tank full of gas. You don't need to worry about brand names, just make sure you use ISOPRPYL, not methyl.
Or you could just fill up with ethanol type gas at the pumps (same thing).

JDKRXW, thanks for the information. I just called my dealer and he said that Yamaha says that alcohol can ruin the engine. Do not use any dry gas mixture, even STP. I do not know if this was Yamaha speak or actually true. Food for thought.

I have been using ISOPROPYL for years in my Yamaha's. I only use it at nite when I fill the tank and put in about an OZ or so. Thats just enough to take care of any moisture that gets in the tank.
Filling the tank at nite helps to prevent moisture from collecting in the tank.
That was with 2 stroke machines and I also use it in the RX.
Now that we are using 4 cycle engines I can't see how Isopropyl could do any damage--the same as in our cars and trucks :?:

This could be true with Methyl Alcohol. Be sure you stick with ISO (of course it costs about 4 X as much as Methyl)

Its NOT the same thing. Ethanol is ETHYL alcohol - thats the same thing as whats in BEER. ISOPROPYL alcohol would KILL YOU. Methanol can make you blind and impotent.
Methanol: CH3-OH
Ethanol: CH3-CH2OH
Isopropyl alcohol (aka propanol-2): CH3-CHOH-CH3
This is why it can damage some motors:
Note that *methane* is CH4... add an O to it between an H and the C and you get methanol. *ethane* is CH3-CH3... same, just add an O. *propane* is CH3CH2CH3... SAME DIFFERENCE..... --> On to *octane* CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH3 becomes *OCTANOL* by putting in an O.
Either remember what I've said or do a search for a thread where I described OCTANE ratings, and compare what is there to what is here. Same thing follows; takes a greater amount of energy to pop an alcohol with a longer chain. By adding methanol to gas, you are effectively LOWERING THE OCTANE VALUE # - causes DETONATION!

Yes. Ethyl or Isopropyl alcohol are acceptable because their octane equivalence is high enough not to cause detonation.

Ok since we're on the subject in Minnesota all the regular grade gas has 10% ethenol added. The only way to get non oxegenated fuel is to buy Premium. The Yammie manual says up to 5% ethenol is ok to run but what about 10%???? I always run premium in my bikes to stay away from the ethanol so have done the same with the RX1 any comments or words of wisdom??? Put 600 miles on the Shorty so far and loving it. Got the front sorted out with springs and shims now on to the rear..
Just want to say that TY rocks!! you guys have made it very easy to make this a great sled without the trial and error that one usually has to go through. Thanks for being there guys.....

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Try the link below for Spanky's, and then search their site for "STA-DRI"
www.spankysparts.com
I have used these for about 12yrs. It is a condom shaped unit that you drop into the tank and forget about. It absorbs any moisture like magic! They are less than about $8 and I have gotten 2-3years before changing. At that time, you just fish it out with a piece of wire or your favorite "grabit" tool.
When I asked my dealer about moisture management in the fuel, he handed me a bottle of Yamaha branded dry gas (Isopropyl). I would rather not carry the bottles so the Sta-Dri solution works best for me. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Dennis Kirk used to carry these but I notice it is not in their current catalog.
