let's just say I had the worse river crossing (done this one 100's of times before).
Sled went down stream with me on it, to the bottom about 5ft under. I didn't get a chance to hit the kill switch before she stalled out (at idle speed). Sled (and I were in the water for about 10-15 min trying to get her out of the water with another sledder who saw me go under).

What do I need to do?
seat off and drying downstairs in the house.
oil drained - slight water in the bottom of the oil tank (running Mobil 5W30).
plugs pulled - turned engine over by hand at the primary - lots of water shot out in every cylinder.
Pulled filters.
Drained crank case.
Sled is currently drying in the garage with three small heaters.
What next???????????????

Hope no rods bent! Not much else you can do but change the oil, let her dry out a little and fire her up. I think it will be ok if it was at idle. Good luck and let us know!

Pour one tablespoon of oil in each cylinder and turn over by hand. This will help keep the rings from rusting to the cylinder wall. And I would turn the motor over by hand at least twice a day (keep plugs out)...Should be all dry and ready to go in two days. My main concern would be the electrical system.

Water isn't really that bad for the motor as long as you didn't hydro-lock. Hope that at idle it didn't have enough inertia to hurt anything.

If it was idling rods will be fine. Just take the sled and pull the plugs tilt it forward to get as much water out as possible. Slap lots of oil in the cylinders and turn it over by hand and then change ur oil and let her run and dump the oil out.

thanks guys.
I got ahold of my old man - and he suggested get it running ASAP and dry the thing out with engine heat.
Dried the plugs with the torch, put new oil in, and turned her over by the startor and it turned over!
Put the plugs back it, after a couple of 10 second turns she fired over ever so slightly. removed plugs, torched them again, turned machine over without plugs in - reinstalled plugs and tried to turn her over again.
Finally got her to idle, but after 10mins she would still bog at anything over 3000RPM.
forgot the clean the carbs as she was stalling when she tried to pick up form the mains!
Drained all four carbs (half water/half gass in each), starter her up (after a couple of seconds as she was dry) and yep she's back to the normal R1 bike sound.
She purrs as good as she ever has, had a nice wash, and looks pretty funky without her seat on.
after everything dries out I think I'm going to be o.k.
My wife was actually very good about the whole thing (at least for today, I'm sure I'll hear about it later...)

to get all the water out of the seat, put the seat between a couple of peices of pressboard or something and park a vehicle, or put something heavy on the board to rid the seat of all the water. Glad to hear shes running. :yam:

Just an update - I got back from a couple day ride - 600 miles or so - and not a single problem. Sled runs as good as it did before it's swim.

Before the trip I was really thinking of doing the bender suspension upgrade next year, but after riding the sled hard, and never bottoming out my #*$&@ really hard (you know, when your stomach goes up into your chest) I think that I'm going to have to forgo the $1400 Canadian for this upgrade. The $15 for the 4" of foam worked great for me.

You also better check your Jackshaft and Driveshaft bearings, along with all your wheel bearings and make sure to grease all your fittings ;)!

I have dropped a yamaha out board 4stroke 25 hp in the bottom of the river twice.both times i pulled the oil filter and the drain. reinstalled used filter and drain. fillled with diesel(cheaper then oil). drained carbuerator. turn engine over without spark plugs and removed water fom intake . drained diesel add oil ,turn over few times and drain. checked all leads and fuses, spray engine with oil penetrant w.d. or similar.
but like previously mentioned you got the chaincase.
i have sunk a few 2 strokes and the main concern to get the engine to turn over was to drain the muffler. There was to much volume to expel and i don' t know if this presents a problem with the 4 strokes.
