Well this project continues. Hey guys...I decided to wire my GPS direct back to the battery instead of a power adapter (cleaner and less obtrusive :? ). Do I require an inline fuse? Is it as simple as RED to +(battery) and BLACK wire to
-(battery) or is there something else I should be doing ? Any help here would be great.

Is there anyone out there who uses BOTH a GPS AND a heated electric shield? I am nervous and don't want to overload the electrical system.

Here is a pic of the wiring I am using. It has bare wires for both the data transfer and power but I will simply need the power wires (Red & Black).

Thanks in advance...RXWonder

Yes red to positive and black to negetive. I run a GPS with the wireing just like your picture, I also run a heated sheild and a power point for my cell phone or any other accessory that I may want to hook up. I put a 10 amp in-line fuse holder farly close to the battery connection, I havn't had 1 problem works great.

Thanks RX1MTN. I have a question...? Why did you put a 10 AMP inline fuse holder? Are you also using a 10AMP fuse as well or is that just the maximum AMPERAGE the fuse holder can take?

If you are not using a 10AMP fuse then what size did you put in?

If you are using a 10AMP fuse then it will do nothing to protect your GPS from a surge as 10 AMP's would fry your GPS. Magellan reccomends a 1 AMP fuse.

Please advise.

I used a universal blade type in-line fuse holder and put a 10 amp fuse in the holder. I wasn't concerned with amprage surge, since it is hooked directly to the battery, as much as I was a shorted wire or sheild ( which hapened on my 98 V-max). Also the power point connector that I use for my GPS in my vehicle does not have an in-line fuse and the fuse for the power point in my vehicle is 15 amp. The only problem I ever had with the GPS on my sled was if I left it pluged in for an extended period of time (2 weeks or so) the connection on the back would not make contact. To correct it I just put some silicone dielectric compund on the connection.

Thanks for the clarification rx1mtn. I was just getting confused there for a minute. Hey have you ever ran the GPS, your shield AND something out of the power point at the same time? Just curious. A tech from Yamaha told me that there is only 40 Watts left to play with on this machine but I have never been able to verify this.

No, but remember I'm hooked directly to the battery, not the accessory plug. So I could probably run anything I wanted, as long as the battery had minimum voltage.
