I have a 2009 Apex wtih a rear mount turbo. I rode it stock for 2000 km using Yamalube. After the turbo install I switched to Castrol 0W30 synthetic. Rode it another 1000 km with no problems. The reason I swithced from Yamalube to Castrol was because of the extra heat from the turbo. Castrol is rated SL and Yamalube is only a SG. The owners manual that came with the sled recommends API SG or higher 0W30. SL should be good to go. One day I was reading a service manual for a 2003 RX1(printed 2002). Recommended oil is API SE, SF, SG or higher 5W30. Printed at the bottom of the page is a caution that states" In order to prevent starter clutch slippage do not mix any chemical additives. Do not use oils witha diesel specification of "CD" or oils of a higher quality than specified. What it saying? First it recommends SG or higher then it warns not to use a higher quality. Supplements to the manual(2004 or newer) does not mention the starter clutch warning. The oil recommendation is API SG or higher 0W30.Did Yamaha change something in the starter clutch since 2003? Were they being over cautious with their warning in 2003? The 2009 owner's manual says nothing about the starter clutch. Has anyone had starter clutch trouble? Was it oil related? I just changed the oil and filter. I decided to use Mobil 1 0W40 because it has a SM rating (even better). If there issue should Amsoil 0W40 with the ATV wet clutch additive be used?
