So I changed over my exhaust donuts and after I put them all back together I ran into a little problem. The bands that hold everything together don't get tight enough. There is still play in the assembly. My plan is to grind down the little spacer in between the band to allow it to get tighter. Has anyone else ran into this problem???

Yes,i change my donuts this winter and tight the clamp and was still loose.it was loose enough to turn the clamp by hand.
So i grind the spacer around 1/16" and the problem was solve.most people that done the job and have to grind them.If they are not tight enough, the clam will get loose and turn and leak and destroy your new donuts in no time.
They is a tread how to do it step by step and explain it all,do a search on a member of this site "Rockerdan" it might help

I'm no engineer but I'd be careful on how TIGHT you go...HEAT = EXPANSION and if you get them to tight they might tend to damage your header FLANGES and then you'll be worst off! these exhaust get real hot and need a lot of expansion, vibration and heat seems to be the culprate that wears out donuts at a slow rate and gets the clamps to loosen no matter how tight you put them...what I'd like to do is to actualy SPRING load the clamps to allow for expansion and absorb vibration, I'm working on it, its to find the proper heat treated springs!

Yep, seems like everyone is having to grind down the clamp. I think it stretches under the heat it's exposed to. When I did mine I replace all of the clamps, before I even looked at them I just ordered all the clamps and bolts thinking that I wouldn't be able to reuse them. Since I already had them I just used the new ones. I figured $50.00 for all four, I've spent more on bearings and such so what the heck. The last thing I wanted was to have a failure mid season due to the clamp loosening up. On the other hand I think if you read the posts and grind it correctly you'll porbably be fine.
For me the amount of time to grind and check, wasn't worth it.

Another clamp option I considered was a spring loaded "Turbo V-Clamp" to keep a tight seal yet allow for expansion.
I think the problem is more with the clamp than the donut. Slight flexing over time wears down the donut and the clamp become non-effective excellerating wear to point of complete failure of donut.
Was working on this with Aaron Excell untill he got real busy starting up his new Yamaha Dealership.
