i have a 2007 attak. late last season noticed rattling coming from exhaust area where donuts are. it comes & goes. dealer tells me it's exhaust shield. they say it happens to alot of these machines. they told me yamaha's fix for this is to remove it ?
any body else have experience with this ?
did you remove it ?

How Many miles are on these sleds??? I noticed a noise last winter around 3000 miles on my sled and the noise drives me NUTS!!! I kept thinking that it is the steering colum but now I am not soo sure. So you are saying that the heat shield that is covering the exhaust manifolds/donuts and start of Y pipes is the noise problem??? My buddys GT has the same noise as mine and I am determined to get rid of the noise before the snow season. :o|

Just repaired these on a buddies sled this weekend. You need the suspension dropped to access them. They're held on by (3) rivets each. On his sled, each sheild had 2 rivets that were completely gone and were being held on by only 1 rivet, which was loose also. Made a horrible noise. If you've got access to a rivet gun, their very simple to fix.
Removing them would put more heat to the track, not the gas tank. Sheilds are between the track and pipe. Doubt it would really hurt the track if you just removed them though.

Does anyone have pics of this????? I am running over all this in my head and I don't believe there is a heat shield anywhere under that tunnel. Are we talking the bottom shield that keeps crap and stuff from going up by the exhaust donuts???? I am trying to visualize this but I am not getting it!!! :o|

The heat shield is under the fuel tank and the rattling noise was one of the donut collar was loose.

The sheild is a thin piece of aluminum that is riveted to the exhaust itself. once they become worn, they will rattle. If the wear out as to lose one of the rivets, the shield will more than likely get caught in the track, like mine did. Scared the s**t out of me going down the trial at 30mph.

I have 3 four strokes and I have ripped them off of all of them a few years ago without any problems.

the heat shield covers the donuts and flex pipes. i don't think you should remove it as the gas tank sits on top. the long tubes on top of tunnel are track guards, they are held by rivits that come loose just replace them. as for noise i would guess it is your exhaust donuts. when they ware out clamps start to viberate. if not changed quickly they will ware out your y-pipes. make sure you change all 4. been there done that. can't wait for snow but going diving in mexico in december

its not rivited it's bolted and im yet to see the bolts come loose. usually its the loose flexpipe flanges rattling.

DO NOT REMOVE HEAT SHIELD THAT IS UNDER GAS TANK!
The shields in question,( that rattle) are rivited to the BOTTOM of the exhaust, in between the exhaust and the track.

guess i started something with this post.
yes i am talking the shields between track & exhaust. not the one above the donuts. i know it is not the donuts, clamps or anything else on the main exhaust system. when the dealer told me the remedy was to remove them they confirmed you have to drop the suspension to remove shields.
the machine has 11,000 kms on it.
the rattle is intermitent. although when it does rattle it's real noisy, little embarassing when you pull up to a group of sleds !

thanks for all the input
