Blue Dave, I might give you this one because I'm in a generous mood. It's the voltage that drops by half not the current, right?

arteeex said:I put the RSI heaters on TOP of my grips and then covered these with a fabric shrink-wrap, which has held up extraordinarily well this season. There are other options for covering the RSI heaters, but the fabric shrink wrap adds very little to the overall diameter of the grip. There’s a warm-up period of several minutes but they do get hot and stay hot during a ride.
Below is an image of the grip and a schematic for connecting the RSI into your system. Send me a PM if you’d like additional details on implementing this mod.
Looking at your wiring diagram, I notice that you left the white wire alone. Would connecting the white and blue wires together accomplish anything more, ie. increase heat?

With two resistors of equal value in a series circuit the voltage drop will be 50% of circuit voltage across both. In a 12V circuit this would result in 6V across each resistor.
This made me re-check my math on my previous post and I had forgotten to calculate the voltage drop in my calculation. I edited the calculation to show the correct power consumption.
In any case the point is that if both resistors (grips) are equal in resistance, both will have the same voltage drop across them and consequently they will both consume the same amount of power.

One reason for wiring the RSI heaters in with the stock units as I did was to get more heat without stressing the ECU. The output of the configuration shown in my cartoon schematic is very close to an earlier version where I used resistors to limit the current draw. The problem with using resistors was they gave up about 22W to the great outdoors. Removing the resistors and wiring the RSI heater through the 12-Ohm leg recovered the lost wattage and put it in the grips. Also, this lets both heater elements run within their design parameters. This setup provides about 46-Watts in each grip and operates through the standard control. I've found this to be plenty of power.
To get even greater output with the dual heater setup you could run the RSI heater through the 6+ ohm leg of the circuit. But this would increase the current draw significantly - and still leave one wire unused. The highest possible output would come from combining the red and blue wires and running this pair with the white wire in a parallel circuit with the stock heaters. This I think would not be very smart or healthy for the sled’s electrical system.

I wire mine red/blue per TY. Can't wait to have warm hands.

I understood the bit about wiring twisting the blue and red wires together(too hot), but I'm not sure you explained my question about twisting the the blue and white wire together as in RSI's instructions and tying them in with the stock heaters. I was wondering if doing so would jump the wattage up a bit more than your

Sorry. Three’s a shorter answer for your question; Yes.
The blue and white will form a 6+ ohm circuit through the RSI heater - as will the red and white. If you twist the blue and white and connect this with the red to the power supply you still get a 6+ ohm circuit but the loose wire is gone.
This lower resistance will deliver more power and draw more current but the effects on the ECU and electrical system are not known, so a bit of caution is advisable.
My suggestion is; if you're going to use the dual heater scheme on each grip, start with what I've described previously, and see how that works for you. If you want to go up in power later it's an easy change to make by swapping the wires around under the hood - provided you label the wires.

How abt wiring the old school 2 wire hot grips in. Anyone think that would work?

Mr. Baller, did you come back just to revist this topic or to stir up controversy with your avatar?
It seems you need to get the heater element resistance down to about 4.5 to 4-Ohms per grip to keep your paws sufficiently warm. I believe with the ON/OFF power cycling of the ECU lower resistance is required to get an output that will do the job. If the Hot Grips provided this level of resistance they would work - but you have to deal with the bar hooks too.

Neither - I just missed you guys & was seeing what was new in the Blue camp. Seems like you guys are really sensitive lately - what's up with that?
I can change my avatar pic to one of my old nytro if you wish. I've got a good shot of it being pulled behind my wifes gade!!

Since we are totally off topic here maybe I will start another thread for posting pictures of Ski-Doo's being pulled back by Yamaha's.
I just wish that I had a camera last year when I pulled a total of three blown up XP 800's back in the same weekend!
