I have a new xtx with 1500 kms....I have at times smelled the slight smell of plastic/oil burning and thought it was just the new machine breaking in. Took it in a 1000 kms for 1st service and all seemed to be fine. A few days ago I was riding on the moose cartier loop when a strong smell plastic burning caused me to stop, I immediately shut off my machine and noticed a slight orange glow coming from the left side near my foot.
I immediately took off the side panel and saw a small fire under the brake rotor, I quickly threw a little snow to put it out, The brake rotor was extremely hot as it was sizzling from the snow I threw on it. My first thought was I must have accidentally somehow left the parking break on, however upon inspection it was not left on. It melted a hole right through the small black rotor protector that runs just under the body.

I have other similar issues as others have as well, p1338/39....codes...which by the way does not cause a hard start for me however both times my machine dropped down to 700 rpm and ran like crap for a few minutes.
My steering also has approximately 2" of sloppy play, I am taking it to the dealer this Monday to have it looked at, has anyone else experienced the hot brake rotor?

No have not had any issues. I did have some crap stuck in there and I took it out. It's easy for stuff to get stuck in there. Maybe take a look ever once in a while. Sorry for your problems! Hope they take care of you and you get back on the trail!

Never heard of this one on a Yamaha or Cat forum. Is it possible that you may have hit something with that black plastic vent shield that sits under the brake rotor causing it to get crushed up into the rotor itself which in turn caused it to get hot and melt? That and the plastic shield under the chaincase are kind of vulnerable.

They are, but you would have to hit a stump or something like that almost perfect do damage that. I have bottomed out a lot and not even a scratch on either of them. In fact not even a scratch on the bottom of my stock skid plate.

I did hit a stump about 3 weeks ago and slightly cracked the lower portion of my plastic front bumper, I have ordered the sport bumper since and awaiting arrival. I have put over 800 kms since then so I doubt it was from that incident. The bottom of sled shows no signs of any damage and that day I was just doing trail riding so I don't think I crushed it or pushed it up in any way.

Update:

Took it in today however found no issues with rotor/caliper it does show signs of extreme heat however no damage,I have never driven with parking brake on however it is possible that I did which may have caused this.

Loose steering problem became a bigger problem last weekend while sledding in Quebec, had approximately 8 inches of slack in the steering which made riding a little scary at high speeds and tight cornering.....they found that a nut had somehow backed off at bottom of steering assembly causing this to happen, it was repaired immediately.

I put on over 1000 kms last weekend and had only 1 hot start issue, it did however start on my second cycle.

My sport bumper finally arrived and I will be intalling it tomorrow, however mid sport windshield apparently another 2 weeks before delivery.

I have adjusted my front shocks/ rear shock etc and am very happy with the setup, had a great weekend of very nice groomed trails and quite a bit of deep powder.

I was in the Quebec Mont-Laurier area and Vipers were seen all over.

tumpline,

Had a great time in Mount Laurier with you guys! Sure glad the dealer was able to fix the steering. I just had mine in for the 1st service and will be adding the turbo in the next coming weeks.

Joe

Good things worked out, nice to know about the steering. No issues on mine.

ViperJoe,

Quebec trip was great, awesome trails there, was great to sled with you all. Finally have my bumper installed. Check with your dealer regarding the reverse gear recall, my dealer says it's a recall for models regardless of vin.
I hear you guys aren't going to make it to cochrane this weekend, Imay get out sunday for a quick trip, let me know if you are free.

Let me know. I just got in from a 400km ride. I got semi aggressive snowtrackers and damn does it ever rail. I'll be riding all weekend. I think i gave you my number but if not send me a msg on here.
