First ride on my new ZR skid!!

When my current track (the used one from my old ZRT) wears out I want to go to 136", but unlike the stock RX skid, I consider it a minor upgrade instead of almost mandatory to get a better ride. Let me know how you feel the difference is between the stock ZR skid and the 136" extensions when you get a chance to try it on some bumpy stuff. I like corner carving at high speeds, so I would never go longer than 136. In my opinion that seems to be the perfect compromise between ride traction, and handling.

Thanks for the great info guys... this site is just awsome :Rockon: Are there any additional reinforcements or brackets that are needed? I believe I read somewhere that you have to get rid of the existing front brackets on the sides of your tunnel??? Thanks again for the help. Bob
 
I'm trying to remember, but I don't think I touched the original front brackets. They are nothing more than thin sheets of aluminum on the inside of the tunnel to double the thickness of the tunnel. I used .090" sheets of aluminum to double the tunnel where the new front holes are, just to play it safe. The rear needs 2 new brackets made, but thats just a matter of cutting out a couple pieces of 1/8" steel plate and drilling a few holes. No welding or fancy fab work needed. The most important thing is to measure everything out carefully.

This is great. Thanks to everyone. Could someone give me an approximate measurement from the bottom of the running boards to the rear suspension bolt location? Also any information as to the size and shape of the rear support plate would be helpful. :rocks: Bob
 
Look around...I can't remember the thread, but it was about cat skids...there is a pic and measurements. As for the bolt, its not an exact measurement. What you need to do is get the bolt as high as possible without hitting the heat exchangers. You will want to clearance them a little with a round file, similar to the stock bolt, but not as much. Remove just the very thin part of the very bottom of the fins. You will need to use an allan head bolt for max. clearance.

Skydog, That was the thread I was looking for... Thanks. I think I may have found an 01 ZR skid for $250 in my area. Looks like a very worhwhile, inexpensive mod. I can't wait to start. Bob
 
You leave the oem front brackets alone. I got another set of them and mounted them for the cat front mounts. They were less than $20 for both of them. The important measurement for the rear is the distance from the front mount, not the height of the hole. I believe it is 23 3/4". I also removed a little material from each side of the front arm so it would fit in the tunnel properly and also make it easier to get in and out.
 
Buckeye, I like that idea using another set of OEM mounts ;)! Is the 23 3/4 inch measurement center to center an actual diagonal measurement between the front and rear shaft? The template from the forum I'm looking at is hard to read unfortunately. I just don't want to mess it up! Thanks alot, Bob

For what its worth, not that you need any more pursuasion, I found that my rear shock in my Cat skid needs rebuilding. Instead of spending a few hundred bucks on a shock, I only have to spend about $35 for a rebuild to be good as new. I'm not complaining about having to do it either...with 2500+ miles on it, if the seller was honest about the mileage on the sled it came off, I would say it was due. I'm just glad I'm out a few bucks instead of having to make a major purchase to replace the factory Yamaha shock!

Oh, and the shock may not be any different than it was last year...I put on 30-40 lbs. since then, so I know I'm sure putting more stress on it!

Jim, I kinda figured that if I bought a used skid it was probably going to be a good idea to have the shocks rebuilt. Especially because the RX1 is a heavier sled to start with. Do you know off hand who rebuilds/revalves Fox or Act shocks? Bob
 
I would try Bruce at Pioneer Motorsports. He is an expert at shocks and knows the RX-1. Pioneer Motorsports sells Cat and is located in NY, so it should be good for you.
 
After trying mine the first time I had to back off the front rear spring pressure and tighten up the limiter straps to keep it from from pulling the skii's 6 feet in the air.The transfer is way better.The ride is much smoother over the small bumps.I havent hit any really big bumps yet to see if it will bottom out.If so I have some stiffer springs and will have the shocks revalved.A great change for very little money.
