I remember those days, I'm only 35 though. 1970 Panther 440, more work than riding, but it was fun.
I think my most reliable sled I ever used was my 1966 Olympic 250. That thing never needed repairs - just maintenance. Sure it had a few "features":
- it took a 2 tubes of grease to grease all of the fittings (each bogie wheel, each cross shaft, rear swing arm, rear axle, front axle, etc., etc.)
- it would quit with vapour lock if it was fully warmed up and you let it idle to long (or if you turned it off hot it was hard to start)
- you also had to blow into the tank after that to get the carb filled up with fuel again (or pour gas into the carb or wait until it cooled down).
- when it backfired you got it right between the legs
- when it didn't backfire after a long (10 mile) ride your crotch was soaked in gasoline and oil
- every now and then you'd hit a huge bump (1 foot mogul at 5 mph...) and the popup headlight would close leaving you riding in the dark
- you had to tighten all of the screws (3) that kept the hood in place after each ride otherwise the hood might fall off and the steering colum would pull out opening the throttle wide open and taking you for a wild 9hp ride
What a great machine...
Top speed was about 30 mph on ice and about 15 mph on snow. With all that power (9 hp) it was a mean machine...
I still have it in my barn and I took it for a ride 2 seasons ago.
As far as the 06 Apex/Attack, I'm sure there will be some problems with them, but they should be better than the 05 RX-1's monoshock suspension (other than the suspension and the freezing crankcase vent the 05 RX-1 was just about bulletproof - just like the 03 and 04s).
Hopefully this year Yamaha will manufacture more parts also so you guys won't be stuck waiting for backordered parts.
As far as the fun factor the 05 RX-1 was the overall most enjoyable sled to ride I've ever owned and I'm convinced the 06 Apex/Attack will be even better.

It goes like this...... Anything mechanical is entitled to break. It may not break today, tomorrow, or next week, but sooner or later it will happen. Just purchase what makes you feel comfortable and have fun with it.

sxmatt, my 1st year RX-1 had a few number of service bulletins o rings leaking on heated carbs, rivets facing wrong way under seat, hood bushings. none off these caused me down time. I'm sure they have the monoshock dialed in. it is interesting about no sleeves in the cylinders though

No that is a 68' with a 15hp Hirth. The first jets with Yamaha motors came along in 1971, the 396's and also a special edition 433 with dual carbs in the SS chassis.

Bodacious do you remember the Star Craft. Ski stance was so narrow you could put on you living floor , sit on it and tip over.
