Not really a 1st year sled. Its slightly modified from the older Exciters... '87 was the first year. It did have a slight problem... it was hard to start. So they changed the carbs on them... and the new carbs resonated weird and bubbled out the gas causing engine burn downs. Eventually solved by adding a weight to the bowl. It was mainly the '88's and updated '87's that had this problem. My '87 has the original carbs, and yes, it is really finnicky to start, but that motor is indestructable.
Yes & No.........Exciter's 1 year was in 1987, but the Exciter II In 1991 was a revamped motor and more refinement 2 the Exciter Overall. And yes they had a Carb issue with the 1st Exciters In 87.......Part of those 2 the NOT SO GOOD LIST OF THINGS TO FIX.
AND THEY DID

Plating the cylinders isn't revamping the motor, nor is mudding down the timing for poorer performance. The only real difference was the back suspension (the first "proaction", which made it slower and was worse in deep snow.) Other changes was a cushy seat and BNG. My buddy has a 92, and I've compared the two very carefully. The main (effective) differences are that his is cushier and mine is WAY faster. I think they slowed Exciter down a whole lot in order to make VMax seem more impressive than it really was when it came out. The older Exciters are faster than any subsequent 2-stroke 600.

That was a good post Bountyhunter. Took me back in time.
I’m willing to bet the 93 Exciter SX was the quickest exciter of all time. It did indeed have more HP then any previous version with new porting and the introduction to flat slide carbs.

Plating the cyclinders was 1 of, different rings, pistons,carbs.....And i'm sure the port opening were changed as well for the timing. Not sure what "MUDDING" is, I just know U will tell me.
The 1st PRO ACTION REAR SUSP was built in 1983, not sure what U mean. As the rear susp should have been the same in both Models The front end on the Exciter II In 93 had a Revamped TSS which was far more beefer and the front end was able to be more aggressive through the Trails & on the Track.
Anyone that owned a 1992 VMAX 4, Will tell you different. And that was and still is a VERY IMPRESSIVE SLED TODAY. No body even tried to copy that one.
BTW.........Tell that 1 to TIM BENDER who owned Eagle River Race track with his Exciters & Vmax's. Yamaha didn't slow down any of their sleds to make another look faster....
...COM ON..........Lazy even U Know that

Slush Monster said:I bought a 2000 mountian max. This was somwhat of a new model. But used some of the proven parts from older mm's . I had 0 problems. The apex is also a new model but many of the parts are already proven performers. The skid has been around now and has been refined. The engine has also been around for many years and is greatly refined. The front end has been proven in the vector series. Clutches are the same and are dead on. Gear box and jack shaft have had the bugs worked out. , Track proven. EFI has been used in bikes on this engine. Its not like this all just came off the line in a brand new never seen or tested sled.
This is a first year for this engine with the weight reduced crank. but being a four stroke and a Yamaha I would not worry about that at all.

BH, Didn't the 98 srx have crank problems? Viper had overheating/fuel pump issues along with the rx1/warrior overheating too? They may not seem like issues to most people, but I want a sled with little to no problems. That's why I buy Yamaha and never a first model year. I'll wait for the refinements. Too expensive to be down during the short winter season.

Didnt the Vector have a few first-year problems as well? TORS malfunctions, idle bearing durability issues and track howl.
Dont get me wrong, I think Yamaha's first year bugs are nothing compared to the issues that the other brands have had, but its still frustrating, especially when you have just paid $8k-$10k on a new sled.

Its just what it sounds like. To make it slow. If you swap the electronics from an 87 into a 91, that 91 will go faster.BOUNTYHUNTER said:Not sure what "MUDDING" is, I just know U will tell me.
I really think you ought to check the parts catalog on this one. 87-90 was a VERY different suspension from the 91+. Which WAS the first proaction, just not the first YEAR of it. In addition to the functional properties, the RAILS were much more agressive (lower approach angle) in the 87-90.As the rear susp should have been the same in both Models
Not talking about the 93. It counts as a "special edition". Particularly given that the standard Exciter was still available in 93.The front end on the Exciter II In 93 had a Revamped TSS which was far more beefer and the front end was able to be more aggressive through the Trails & on the Track.
Oh sure, compare a 600 to an 800. Thats fair. How about vmax600's? Those were SLOW. ALL of them.Anyone that owned a 1992 VMAX 4, Will tell you different. And that was and still is a VERY IMPRESSIVE SLED TODAY. No body even tried to copy that one.
Modified doesn't count. Try again. Stock for stock, VMAX is SLOWER. Also, go compare any 91-93 (except SX) against an 87-90. Also, try using a VMax600 as a baseline. The VMax600 is a little faster than the 91-93, but gets nicely coated with a thick covering of snow dust by the 87-90. Unless you think that mine is anomalous in its propensity to beat ANY OTHER stock yamaha 2-stroke 600 (except ESX, which I haven't had the pleasure of racing, so I don't know, and SRX600, which I'm sure is faster) by 200+ feet in 1/4, then you have your results.BTW.........Tell that 1 to TIM BENDER who owned Eagle River Race track with his Exciters & Vmax's. THe Viper didnt come out until 2002, it had a horrible rear suspension! and over heated on my ALOT!! One of the best handling sleds ive ever owned and rode the worst!
THe 04 warrior still didnt handle that great out of the box... but rode great! and i did overheat on me a few times!
One thing you guys dont realize is, that they let everyone test ride these sleds last year... Something that previously had never been done except for mazine writers!
If MR sled says the 2006 sleds are the SHIZNITZ... then they must be... HE RODE EM!

Some people had problems! I didn't! My SRX700 is still with me and never had it back to the dealer for anything other than track warranty! My son won't let me sell it cause he wants it to be his when he gets back from Iraq. That says alot to me because he flys around in a $25million dollar Apache. Oh, but wait till he gets a chance to ride my Apex he may change his mind a little.
I also have the 02 Viper and its never overheated on me! EVER! I even like the stiffer suspension it has. One thing I have never had is a back stinger on a Yamaha sled!
