The yamaha ones you have shown in the picture look to be neoprene which offers good protection but also hides any trapped dirt or grit; you should inspect under there once in awhile. Since the tube portion of the shock is located at the bottom it is suceptable to not only dirt & girt but also stones from getting roosted in low snow conditions or say if you were racing snow X, and for roost protection the plastic guard offers better shielding capabilities.
I have the Fox guards on since early last season purchased from the online cat country dealer. They work good and stay in place. If you ride in marginal conditions using both style guards would not be overkill.
I have been using the airprene covers on my front fox floats since yamaha originally released them. I have over 9000 miles on them and They dont trap dirt. The shocks are as clean and unscratched as the day i bought the sled.
Also, the picture you are basing your statements off of shows the cover installed wrong.
The airprene cover should be secured using a tywrap (provided with the covers) at the very bottom of the shock. Not 2 inches up as shown in the picture. The airprene cover is strechable and has velcro running the length of it.
Once secured it does not move and there is full shock coverage.
These worked so well for me that i bought a second set and had one installed over my megafloat in the rear skid.
This is an area where there is constant dirt water and snow. if there was an issue with trapping dust and dirt it would be apparent real quick.
I have put over 6000 miles on the megafloat with the airprene cover and it is still in mint condition with no knicks dings or scratches

The only bad thing about the airprene covers is that you are unable to see the shock. Being able to see the shock allows you to see if it is failing and leaking any oil.

if you get any grit in there it will just scratch your shocks untill you take them off
Can you post a few links to where you have heard or actually seen this happen??
Again, i have been using these airprene shock covers for the past few years and thousands of miles without any of the issues being stated.
I ride early season and late season. Through dirt mud and water.
All of my shocks look like new when you remove the airprene covers.
I understand the theory but the fact is that what you are stating has not been my experience nor have i ever seen a single statement (other than opinions) reinforcing your views. If you guys have that info i would love to see it.
Again this is a snowmobile, not an atv you just dont get the kind of dirt and mud penetrating the shock covers that you guys seem to think is happening.
If you did, being that this is the internet, the issue would be reported and blown completely out or proportion just like rvery other snowmobile problem.
Im not looking to argue the point i am simply trying to seperate fact from fiction and real world experiences from opinions of what someone thinks will happen.
If you have not used a product you really should not post opinions on it. It really helps no one.
